S7 No Text Message Notification

Problem: For some reason i can send and receive texts but no notification at all. Went and changed the volumes to high and still nothing. I have to randomly look down at my phone to see if i have a message. All my other notifications still work tho like fb messenger and stuff

Related Problem: Hi, I am not receiving notifications when I recieve texts. My phone doesn’t vibrate or anything, so the only way i know if i have a text is if i unlock my screen and see that there’s a new message. how can i fix this problem?

Solution: Try checking the notification setting of the messages app and make sure that it is turned on. To do this go to Settings – Notifications – Make sure that the switch is on for Messages.

Try also changing the notification sound for messages as the current notification sound might have a problem. To do this go to Settings – Sound and vibration – Notification sound – Messages Notification.

If the above steps don’t work then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then you might have installed an app in your phone that’s causing this problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S7 Text Message Just Says Downloading

Problem: Good morning, I just purchased this phone about 2 weeks ago and I often receive text messages and it just says downloading.  I received two messages last night and it is still showing downloading this morning.  I am using the sms app.  Please help! Thanks so much!

Solution: If it says downloading when you receive a message then you are most likely getting an MMS. To be able to download or send an MMS you should have an active mobile data connection and you should turn on the mobile data switch of your phone. The APN settings of your phone should also match the settings being used by your network.

S7 Invalid Recipient Error In Group Messaging

Problem: I just got a new Samsung S7 yesterday and I can make and receive calls as well as sent individual text messages with no problem. But when if I try to send a text to multiple people or respond to a text with multiple people on it, I always get a failed message that says “invalid recipient.” I’ve tried restarting my phone, turning on my mobile data, checking the phone numbers I’m trying to text back, force stopping my messenger app, clearing the cache on my messenger app…

Solution: If the phone numbers of your contacts are correct and you have already cleared the cache and data of the messages app then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Start the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone works in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are prevented from running. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then app could be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S7 Stopped Sending SMS To Premium Numbers

Problem: My s7 all of a sudden stopped sending SMS (the numbers to get coupons, like target, 95730 type of numbers) I have been to the Verizon store and they called tech support. I was there for over an hour and the problem is still not fixed. I can’t even reply to the messages to opt out. We even reset my settings and it did nothing. Tech support said there was nothing on my account. I need this fixed!

Solution: You can change this setting by  going to Settings – Applications – Application Manager – Messages. From here look for Permissions and on the Send Premium SMS portion set it to always. Now there are some owners of this device who don’t have this setting, probably due to a software bug. Try checking if your phone is running on the latest software version. If it is and you can’t find the setting to change the way you send a premium SMS then your only other option is to do a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

S7 Cannot Send Group Messages To iPhones

Problem: Hi, I just bought an unlocked Samsung S7 SM-G930U. I cannot send or receive group messages with iPhones through MMS. Mobile data is on. I previously had the S5 and group messaging worked fine. Is the issue related to converting from a Micro SIM to a Nano SIM? Do the iPhone’s need to delete the original group chat with my number in it?

Solution: Can you send a group message to Android phone users? If you can and the issue only occurs when sending out to iPhone owners then have them delete the previous group message in their phone’s. Make sure that when they send you a group message it is sent as a text message and not as an iMessage.

S7 Randomly Stops Sending/Receiving Text Messages

Problem: Phone randomly stops sending/receiving messages. Sometimes even stops receiving data even though I consistently have LTE signal. Then the floodgates open and I receive all of them at once.

Solution: It’s very likely that this issue is caused by some form of corrupt data. Try performing the following troubleshooting steps listed below to fix this problem. Move to the next step if the issue still occurs.

  • Clear the cache and data of the messaging app.
  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

S7 Lag In Opening Conversation Of One Contact

Problem: One of my contacts specifically is extremely slow to open our conversation in the messages app. It’s slow for the keyboard to pop up and slow to hop out of the keyboard to scroll through our msgs. All others are fine. I’d prefer not to delete our msg history as some of it is important to me.

Solution: you should try clearing the cache of the messages app and see if this works. If it doesn’t then you will have to backup the text message conversation of the particular contact then delete your conversation thread.

S7 Old Text Messages Are Attaching To New Ones

Problem: Random really old text messages are attaching to news ones as they come in – similar to issue I saw on your forum relative to old pictures. The old message is not even from same sender. I followed advice for random picture attaching issue but not fixed. Really do not want to have to reset phone or delete all texts as this is a work phone and I need messages.

Solution: This issue is usually caused by some form of glitch in the phone software. Try clearing the cache and data of the messages app first then check if this fixes the problem. You should also try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. If the problem persists then you should consider doing a factory reset. Just make sure to backup the data stored in your phone.

  1. On my S7 I am having a similar problem. If I’m on the screen of the person I’m texting and they send me a text it won’t notify me. So if I text someone and put my phone down (still turned on) and they text back I won’t get a notification. If I close out of Messages or that person it works fine.

  2. Thanks ,solved my problem ,for some reason ,kept getting texts but not being alerted ,not sure if default setting is off but when I went to apps notifications ,messages were turned off ,contacts were on so I’m thinking there should be no issue but I had to keep scrolling down until I saw messages, kept checking volume ,settings ,but did not resolve issue ,thanks for posting these troubleshooting issues ,worked on my Samsung J7

  3. PERFECT my Notification’s were off for Messages for some reason, slid it to the ‘ON’ position, problem solved! Thank you!!!

  4. @Morris – If your response was for me I think you may have misread my post. I get msg alerts as long as I have not sent a msg within that last 10 or so minutes. But from the time I send a msg and until the 10 minutes are up the phone will not provide an audible alert for my received msgs.

  5. If your S7 doesn’t give you audible notifications in the standard Message App, try to removing your security apps. I had SECURITY MASTER installed, and after going in and out of SAFE MODE for an hour, found it to be the culprit. Uninstalled it, and Messaging now gives me sound notifications again like normal.
    Good luck to you.

  6. I just upgraded from an S3 to an S7. To be honest I am wanting to go back to my S3. Could just be a familiarity thing. But I do have a couple things that seem silly to me with the S7 since the S3 did them while the S7 does not. Pehaps these are settings or user issues. So I am looking for some advice.

First is that while I am texting with someone the phone only alerts me of received texts if I have not sent one out in a while. I have not timed it but just to make this easier to understand I will trow out some numbers as examples. So let’s say I send out a text. The other party responds 4 minutes later. I will not get any notification. The other party then sends a second text after 10 minutes. For this text msg I will get a notification alert. It seems like the phone is setup with the expectation that I am staring at the screen for up to a certain amount of time and therefor the phone sees no reason to provide me with an alert notification. I would prefer to receive alerts for each msg like I have with every single other phone I have had.

Second could just be the app version for this phone verses my S3. I use my phone to stream music from Slacker to my car radio. On my S3 I was able to use my radio controls to go to the next song or to pause the song. But on my S7 I cannot do this.

Third is also a music thing. On my S3 when I played my music files via “my files folder” it would automatically go to the next song when the current one was complete. With the S7 it will only play the currently selected song and then stop. This is no good for me if I am streaming music while driving. I downloaded an app that allows the player to go to another song but it only plays in shuffle mode and I cannot find a way to turn shuffle off.

I just do not understand why my S3 could do these things and this newer more advanced S7 cannot. It seems like a step backward. Any advice will be apreciated.

P.S. these are just what I have found in the week that I have had this new phone.

  7. Yep, the notifications thing fixed my problem with not text messages. Huge save for a stupid problem since I’m not sure why it would have gotten changed. Did get a software update recently that also removed the rotate screen option though, so I’m guessing it was something to do with that. Thanks!

  8. I called tech support at at&t about not being able to enable premium texts on Samsung Galaxy phones. The tech guys were baffled…their phones were just like mine. The options are not available on all phones, especially if your software is up to date. A factory reset did not help my phone. They are working on it and trying to figure it out. If it is because of the last update, they may have to do another update. I’ll let you know when I hear from them. I tried everything to fix it and spent hours trying, and after several back and forth phone calls they were just as baffled as me!

  9. I do not get notifications when i receive Text messages. I checked the settings, notifications are enabled, notification sound is up but no notification. Also i used to get an icon on my locked sceen to let me know but that also isn’t happening anymore. Not sure what else to do. Please help.

  10. I am getting text messages notification every minute, but no text Just notification s

  11. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! For some asinine reason they set the notification setting to be yes for every thing but my messages. No I do not want a weather update every 10 minutes. Also I have the galaxy S8+ and for the first time in my about 8 years of having Samsung galaxy esqu presmart phones and then the galaxy and then the note. I have never had any problems with my phone. I feel like this is a prototype phone and I am really really salty about it. Lots of lag and various problems.

  12. This works on S7 & J7:
    1. Go to stettings
    2. Scroll down the list to Applications
    3. Click to open & then click on Application Manager
    4. Scroll down the list to Messages & click to open.
    5. Scroll down the list to Notifications and click to open.
    6. At the top of the list you will see Allow Notifications.
    6. Click on the slider to enable.

  13. i receive a notification if someone send me a message, but if I generate the message and they reply, I don’t receive a notification that they’ve replied. Is there something I need to do?

  16. I get the following message when someone tries to send a picture
    No Subject
Message size: 73KB (or size of photo)
    Expires: 2:42 PM Jun 7

  17. My issue is that on my home screen (Galaxy S7) I don’t always see exclamation point on the message icon to let me know that I have a new message. Is there anything that can fix the intermittent issue that I’m experiencing?

  18. I have been having the same problem with not getting the notification when I would get a new text message but only with the text messages everything else worked fine I did what Brian said yes and uninstalled the CM Security master program and my phone is now working just fine. Thank you Brian for your info

  19. For the “S7 No Text Message Notification” issue, I found that an update to CM Security Master Antivirus is causing the issue. Once I uninstalled CM Security, the text notification sounds started functioning normally again. CM Security needs to fix the bug in their latest update.

  20. Every time I send a text message with or without pictures my phone sends me the text then a separate one of me replying to me… Please help this is super annoying!

  21. I get messages and notifications all the time but no notifications come on my phone. I have to psychically go into the app to check my messages. If I drag the bar down at the top of my phone I can see no notifications it doesn’t even show the music I’m listening to when I listen to music. Please help 🙁 !!

  22. My Galaxy S7 beeps once when I receive a text message but does not continue after the first beep, while the S5 did so. How can I fix this?
