I recently purchased a Galaxy Note 5 running Marshmallow, and love it. However, after just two days of use the phone is freezing, self-restarting, and will not stop this cycle. I have done a force restart; did not resolve the issue. Then I cleared the cache partition; also didn’t work. Then I did a factory reset. Funny thing is, it worked for about 36 hours. I went to bed, then used it lightly for 8 hours as I work during the day and don’t require much use of my phone. When I got home, I used it heavily for a couple of hours and still had no problem. Once my phone got to about 36% battery life and I closed the Street view app, the problem presented itself again. Any help is appreciated, as I am exchanging this one for another and would like some insight in case this happens again. — Nrhydeburton1
Solution: Hi Nrhydeburton1. First of all, we assume that the phone has never been rooted and does not run non-official software. If you did any of this without telling us about it, we suggest that you contact the developer of the root or custom software you’re using, or the community that uses it. Custom software are usually developed by creative Android users and they are usually open for everyone to use. While this is what makes Android fun and exciting, no system is ever perfect. Problems that may arise from using a particular community-developed software can have a specific cause so we recommend that you talk to the software developer, or share the issue with the community so you can find help.
Secondly, there’s no official word from Samsung or Google about this problem so we should treat it like any ordinary issue — if you can’t fix it using basic software solution, you should consider repair or replacement. Because the phone worked normally right after a factory reset, there’s a chance that one of the third party apps, introduced after the reset, may be causing the problem. To check, you should boot the phone to safe mode. Here’s how :
- Turn off the phone completely.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- Once ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- The phone will restart but keep the Volume Down button pressed.
- Once the phone has finished restarting, ‘Safe mode’ will be display in the lower-left corner of the screen.
- You may now release the Volume Down button.
Keep in mind that safe mode is not a solution in itself but rather a means to an end. You should use it in order to compare how the phone works in this mode versus normal mode. If everything works while safe mode is enabled, that’s a confirmation of our hunch, that one of the third party apps is the culprit. Safe mode won’t tell you which particular app is problematic though so you should isolate possible causes further. How you do that is up to you but basically you want to pin down the problematic app as soon as possible.
On the other hand, if nothing changes even when safe mode is enabled, the next best thing to do is batter calibration. To do that, follow these steps:
- Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
- Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
- Charge the phone without turning it back on.
- Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
- Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
- If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
- Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
- Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
- Repeat the cycle once.
If both of these processes won’t fix the problem, go ahead with product replacement.
Hey guys. I am having some issues with “messages” on my Android Galaxy Note 5.
Problem 1: I am trying to clean up my text messages as some of my contacts have over 4K messages and it is time to clean house. Usually I can just go in and delete the messages I want to delete no problem, but as of a few days ago I would go in and try to delete multiple or just one message at a time and I get the “Unfortunately, Messages has stopped” error message. It kicks me back out to the home screen. I am still able to text and send pictures in messages and am receiving the same from my contacts without any problems.
Problem 2: In addition, when I am texting regular messages I have found that sometimes the app will either slow down or not be able to keep up with my texting and it will display the last button I have depressed and then pause. I of course continue typing and then it eventually catches up. This never happened before and has not improved despite resetting the phone. I have read your article about the problems with messages due to the update from Lollipop to Marshmallow and I am thinking that the “clear the cache” idea might work. As I am not very phone savy I thought I would double check with you guys and see if you could explain to me what happens when I clear the cache. I am not interested in deleting all the messages as there are some pictures/messages that I want/need to keep. I noticed also that your article did not include screen images – I find pictures of the screens to be helpful in direction as well.
So far I have: turned off my phone and then turned it back on after a while. restarted my phone. Let me know if there is any other information that you need. Thanks for your help in advance. — Jefferson
Solution: Hi Jefferson. The main cause of your problems may be attributed to the huge number of your messages. Samsung’s Messages app have been known to experience slow performance issue if its cache is corrupted, or if there are simply too many messages stored in it. Wiping the Messages app’s cache may or may not fix the problem so you must try it first. An app’s cache is consists of temporary files used by the system to open the app quickly every time you load it. Sometimes, the cache can get corrupted, resulting to erratic behavior of the app itself. Deleting the cache can easily fix the problem though. If you haven’t done it yet, here’s how it’s done:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.
- Tap Clear Cache button.
Once you’ve cleared the cache of Messages app, restart the phone and observe how the app behaves. If the problem returns, the next move you have is to clear Messages app’s data. Before you proceed with this process though, make sure that you create a back up of your SMS and MMS by using Samsung’s Smart Switch app. To do that, install the Smart Switch app on both your phone and your computer first. Once you have the app installed on both devices, initiate the transfer of your SMS and MMS. Afterwards, wipe the Messages app’s data. In order to prevent the issue from returning, try to limit the number of messages you keep in the app itself.
Problem #3: Verizon Galaxy Note 5 creates separate MMS thread from SMS when used in T-Mobile network
I have a Samsung Note 5. I recently switched from Verizon to T-Mobile. Once that switch happened I immediately started having text message issues. The biggest issue is this. Someone sends a text message (with text only). This shows up as normal; the name of the person sending the text appears at the top of the thread. BUT if that person sends me a picture it will go into another group like message. The message shows up as the persons number as well as mine. So I have this group like message and the regular text message threads making me have to go back and forth between messages. It’s very frustrating. Help me please! — Hayley
Solution: Hi Hayley. The cause of the problem may be a bad messaging app. Clear the cache and data of the messaging by doing the steps we provide to Jefferson above and see what happens. If that won’t solve the issue, consider getting another messaging from Google Play Store.
Keep in mind that some functionalities of the phone may not work normally after switching to a different network. Your phone is still running the software of Verizon even if the device itself has already been network unlocked so there may be some problems when it comes to compatibility. For direct support, make sure to report the trouble to your new carrier, T-Mobile, to see if they’re aware of this problem.
Phone got wet through a pocket and an otter-box case. First, the lock button would no longer work and now the screen will flash green. It’s low on battery so I tried to plug it in. This made the screen flash green constantly and then it restarted. When I unplugged it the phone started back up. But will keep flashing green or with a white/ overexposed screen. I now have the phone on power saving mode because I’m waiting on an important text. Have never had problems with the phone before. — Shaylin
Solution: Hi Shaylin. If this problem started right after the phone was exposed to water, there’s no point in doing anything on your level (unless you have necessary knowledge on how fix hardware issues). Water damage can lead to all sorts of problems. In an ideal world, you are supposed to open the phone up and dismantle components inside so you can remove the battery, clean them with alcohol, and then dry them up (usually by leaving them inside a bad of rice for weeks). The removal of the battery, cleaning, and drying of inside components are considered “first aid” processes to hopefully save the phone from permanent damage. Corrosion can set in hours after moisture reaches the motherboard or other metallic components so you want to do “first aid” right away. The longer you let moisture stay inside, the greater the chance that your phone will suffer from permanent damage. If you didn’t do this within the first five hours, your only hope now may lie with having the phone’s hardware checked by a professional. The issues you’re describing are most likely signs of on-going hardware malfunction so there’s nothing that you can do about them at this time.
Hi. I’m having a microphone problem with my Note 5. I drop it once at waist high and all of a sudden microphone stops working. When i went to a cellphone repair they told me it’s weird both microphone to stop working at the same time. I can the hear the other person on the other end but they can’t hear me at all. Even if put it on speaker, it’s still the same. I tried every solution on your site, factory data reset it a few times and i have put the phone in safe mode and tried it but still nothing. Solution: Hi Jay. There’s one thing that we can comment on this one: hardware problem cannot be fixed a software hack. This is the reason why factory reset did not do anything at all.
To confirm if microphone is indeed no longer working, try to record your voice and listen to it. If your voice sounds soft or non-existent at all, you can bet microphone is indeed broken. The drop may have damaged the microphone permanently so the best thing that you can do right now is to get a new phone.
Good day. I hope that you are well. I came across your website after I have been experiencing some trouble with my new Samsung Note 5. A few things seem to go wrong with my phone.
- Some of the things I have noticed is that when I switch my phone on, I only see the Android logo, no Samsung logo whatsoever.
- My phone downloads apps simultaneously. After the factory reset the pop ups were still there. I did delete the files from my file manager and also from my App Manager. Although the pop ups come back or the icon reappear on my screen.
- My multi window appears even though the setting is deselected.
- Some of the icons, for instance in the Settings App, (the S Pen button) doesn’t work. I select it but nothing happens. In a few built in apps this seems to be the case, like in the camera App as well.
- I cannot download any apps because it keeps on giving me the “insufficient space on device” error, even though I have cleared my cache and rebooted my device. I have 17GB free space.
- When I am in a app like App store, the place on my screen where you can see notifications, time and so on, its white and I can only see if I tilt my phone and view it from a different angle.
I really hope that you will be able to assist me. I live in Namibia and a good phone technician is no where to be found. Kind regards. — Izelle
Solution: Hi Izelle. We don’t know the full history of your phone so we will repeat what we tell Nrhydeburton1 — If your phone’s software is no longer the official Samsung ROM, or if you rooted your phone, basic software troubleshooting that we usually provide may not work.
Also, instead of answering the items individually, we recommend that you try factory reset to fix them all at once. There may be a general software issue that causes some apps and features to act erratically. Factory or master reset will restore all software settings back to their default, working state. This means that all user data (photos, videos, music, contacts) and customizations will be erased as well as all third party apps. A known working operating system version will be installed, effectively transforming the software environment as a clean slate. If a software glitch is causing all your issues, master or factory reset should fix the device, or at least your phone will be back to normal right after a factory reset. If nothing changes after a factory reset, then hardware malfunction may be responsible. In this case, you want to have the phone replaced.
For reference, here are the steps on how to master reset your Note 5:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
- Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
- Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
- The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
- Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
- When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
- The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.
