Note 4 Always Shows Notification About Software Update

Problem: I just got my “used” samsung galaxy note 4. After i finish setting the startup, the software update show the notification. I download it, installed it. But it is never stop. Every time i finished install the sofware update, the phone restart and show notification that the software installed succesfully, but after that always show the notification about software update again. What should i do?

Solution: What you should do first is compare the software version that your phone is running on and the version the notification. If they are different then chances are the one showed by the notification is the latest version which you should install. This particular issue usually occurs if the phone hasn’t been updated for quite some time.

If however the notification shows the same software version that is already installed in your phone then this could be caused by a glitch. Try wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode and see if this works. If it doesn’t then you should backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Note 4 Not Receiving Marshmallow Update

Problem: Good morning I’m having a Samsung galaxy note 4 and till now haven’t received an update to either lollipop or marshmallow.. it’s still on android KitKat 4.4.4 . I wanted to know what could be the reason for the same.

Solution: There are certain conditions that your phone must meet in order for it to get the official software updates.

  • If your phone is an unlocked device then it should be running on its original network.
  • The phone must not be rooted.
  • The phone must not Solution: be running on a custom software.

If your phone meets the conditions listed above and it’s still not getting updates then you should try connecting the device using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch running and let any of the two software do the update. Should this fail I suggest that you backup your phone data and do a factory reset. Once the reset is done check for the update again.

One last step you should consider if the phone doesn’t update is to manually flash your device with its latest stock firmware file. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

Note 4 Unable To Update The Software Error

Problem: Hey android guy! So I have a note 4 which I unlocked. I forgot when you unlock you then have to manually do the software updates. It says I last checked on 7/7/16. When I try to download it says: unable to update the software. a network or server error occurred. try again later. Please help!

Solution: Sometimes this issue can be caused by our Wi-Fi connection or some problem with the carrier. Try connecting your phone to a different Wi-Fi network then check if you can do the update. If the issue still occurs then try waiting for 24 hours to let the carrier work out any problems that it might have on their end.

If you the problem still occurs even after waiting for 24 hours then try to perform the following steps listed below.

  • Connect your phone using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch running. Allow the software to update your phone.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Check for the update again.

If the above steps fail then you should consider manually flashing the update to your device. Instructions on how to flash your phone can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

Note 4 Screen Stays Black After Software Update

Problem: My galaxy note 4, requested an update, then it just went OMG DEAD!!! The blue light (indicator for something is waiting) is doing a slow fade in & out. Also the phone isn’t off or on, the screen won’t go to main screen or lock screen. It will do the start up, if I attempt to turn it off/on, then the screen just stay black.

Solution: What you will need to do first in this particular issue is to take out the battery and the microSD card of your phone ( if you have one installed). Press and hold the power button for at least a minute. What this does is it discharges the phone circuit and clears out its RAM. Reinsert just the battery ( leave the microSD card out for now) then turn on your phone. Does your phone turn on completely? If it doesn’t then try connecting the phone to its charger then turn it on again. In case the problem disappears then you might want to try using a new battery on your phone. Should the issue persist then follow the steps listed below.

  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. Restart your phone then check if the issue still occurs.
  • Start the phone in recovery mode then do a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you might want to consider flashing your phone with its updated stock firmware file. Please check on the various popular Android forums online for specific instructions on how to do this with your phone model.

Note 4 Unable To Update Phone Software

Problem: Purchased an Samsung Note 4 last year from China. It is an unlocked phone and had no trouble activating through AT&T. Unable to update phone at all, took to Best Buy to Samsung rep and they worked on it for a long time with no success. Another problem is when I receive text message from people in my contact list only number is displayed and not their name. Any ideas?

Solution: Since this is an unlocked phone then it will be checking for software updates on the servers of its original network. The only way the phone can access these servers is if the SIM of the original carrier is inserted into the device. Since this this might be impossible to do right now since you aren’t in China the only other option is to manually flash the updated firmware file to your phone. You can check on the various Android forums online for instructions on how to do this.

As for the numbers only displaying in text messages instead of the sender name this could be caused by various software issues. To fix this do the following.

  • Make sure that the contact has the correct number in your contacts list.
  • Clear the cache and data of the contacts app.
  • Make sure that the correct contact display option is chosen.  Open the contacts app and its Settings then go to Contacts to display. Try choosing the “All” option.
  • If the above fails then try to backup your phone data and do a factory reset.

Note 4 Crashes After Updating to Marshmallow

Problem: Since the update to 6.0.1 the system crashes and reloads, sometimes every half hour, the battery is also getting hot when it happen, today it did it 4 times in a half hour period

Solution: It’s possible that this problem is caused by some form of old software data that has not been removed during the update process. This old data is now causing a conflict with the new software version resulting in this issue. The quickest way to fix this is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Note 4 Not Updating From Lollipop To Marshmallow

Problem: I have the Samsung galaxy note 4 and it won’t update from lollipop to marshmallow, it has an error, I’ve tried factory resetting it, I’ve tried to take it to a pro. He said there was something in it that was stopping it from updating, so he removed it. That didn’t work, so he said that I need to get a new Sim card from my carrier, verizon, that also didn’t work. I hope that there is something that will work. And I got the phone around a month ago. Thanks for your help.

Solution: If your phone is rooted or running on a custom firmware then it won’t be getting the official software update from Verizon. What you should do is to unroot your phone ( if it is rooted) and make sure that it is running on its original software. Once this is done the phone will get the updates.

You might also want to consider flashing your phone with its updated firmware file. Instructions on how to do this can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.
