Problem #1: Galaxy Note 4 shuts off on its own when being used | Galaxy Note 4 only remains powered on when connected to charger
My Samsung Galaxy Note 4 turns off when trying to use the camera or some other feature, as well, and gets stuck on a continuous cycle to turn itself back on again. It gets as far as the black screen with the Android Logo on it and turns off again and then on again, off again, on again, etc… never completing the restart cycle. No matter what I do it is stuck on the on/off cycle. The only thing that helps to turn my Note 4 back on again is to plug it into a charger – auto or wall charger, and leave it plugged in for at least a couple of minutes. I can then start it and it will stay on until I try to use it off the charger again causing the whole cycle to start again.
Sometimes the only way i can get the on/off cycle to stop is by removing the battery and reinstalling it. At that point, if I try to turn it back unplugged from a charger, it will get stuck in the on/off cycle again. It is a two year old phone. It takes a full charge in the battery and I can use it off the charge, like I’ve always been able to use it for the same duration of battery charge time. The first time this ever occurred was when I was taking photos. On that occasion, it was the first time it got stuck on the on/off cycle. Now, even if I’m recording voice, using the camera, or talking and trying to text at the same time it goes into this cycle. I got a flash advertisement, once, stating that my phone had 29 viruses in it and that my data would be lost if I didn’t contact them. About that same time is when this began to happen. This was approximately 3 weeks or a month ago. This issue seems to be worsening.
I went to Best Buy and spoke to a “Samsung Expert.” They told me that they could attempt to Flash the phone but that it might cause a loss of data. Another individual told me that I could back up all my data into an extended memory chip. So I bought one, installed it, but I don’t know if in fact I can back up all my text, photo, voice recordings, etc… even to the minute details of my phone settings for ring tones for individual callers, etc.. My voice recordings contain songs I have recorded and other messages that are important to me. They also explained to me that I can go to a Samsung web-site and upload all my phone information, data, etc… into a cloud and then later retrieve it into a new phone or computer. I don’t know how much of this it true but I need my phone on a daily basis and it is no longer dependable for that type of use. — Xavier
Solution: Hi Xavier. First off, let’s talk about creating file backups. If you want to make a copy of your important files, the simplest way to do it is by using the free Samsung Smart Switch app. You must download this app to both your phone and computer (PC or Mac) first before you can initiate a transfer. The things that you can move over to your computer includes:
- Photos and Videos
- Device settings
- Among others
We’re not positive though if it’s also capable of saving particular ringtone settings. We don’t think it can but you can try it. We’re also not aware of any third party app that can do what you want so try to do some research on this one.
Secondly, for your main issue, we think that the problem is due to a bad battery. If you’re still using the original battery until now, it’s high time that you consider using a new Note 4 battery at this time. A Lithium-ion battery like the one in your phone can’t last forever. A battery of this type will normally show signs of performance problems 6 months onwards, though in hardly discernible manner at first. The more you use the battery, the smaller its capacity becomes. The smaller the capacity becomes, the more charging sessions becomes necessary. It’s possible that the main reason why your phone appears unable to stay powered on is its acute capacity problem. That’s why it only seems to work when it’s plugged in to a charger.
Thirdly, there’s also a chance that your phone may be infected with malware. One of the signs of malware infection in Android systems nowadays include persistent ad pop ups. Make sure that you wipe the phone clean by doing a factory reset. Here’s how:
- Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
- When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
- When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
- The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.
If the pop ups persist after a factory reset, bring the phone to a store so you can have the software flashed.
Hi there! I am having problems with the battery of my Samsung Note 4. I purchased the device in 8/2015 and I have never changed the battery. Current battery life is ok, but does not last as long as it used too. My biggest problem is the device turns off with 20-35% battery power left, especially if I am using the camera! I bought a replacement battery online and inserted it, but instead of turning on the phone get stuck in an infinite loop of the initial Samsung boot-up screen. I turned the phone off and charged it to 100%. After that it would turn on, but only if it stayed plugged in to the wall. When I unplugged it, it turned off immediately. When I switched back to my old battery and charged it up, the phone turned on and functioned as usual once again. Does this mean the replacement battery is a dud? Is this a calibration issue?
Finally, I think my device memory is clogged with multiple copies of pictures and other media. All my pics autosave to Gallery and I sync with Google Photos. I think this has created duplicates of everything, but I’m not sure how to fix it. Thank you so much for your help! Best. — Adriana
Solution: Hi Adriana. This may be a calibration issue only so your first task is to make sure that you train the phone how to read battery level correctly. With the new battery inserted, try to calibrate the battery reading again by doing the following steps:
Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
- Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
- Charge the phone without turning it back on.
- Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
- Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
- If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
- Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
- Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
- Repeat the cycle once.
Once you’ve calibrated the battery, you also want to make sure that the device has a fresh system cache. Wipe the cache partition by doing these steps:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 54 completely.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
- Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note 4’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
- Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
- The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
- Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
- When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
- The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.
Both of these procedures should be enough to bring back the normal battery function. If the phone continues to shut down when using the second battery, other unknown hardware cause may be behind the problem. Do a factory reset then observe how the phone behaves for 24 hours. If the same problem remains, consider sending the phone to Samsung or any relevant party for repair or replacement.
For a couple months now I’ve been having issues with my Note 4. The battery dies at 60% or less. I purchased a new battery thinking that may be the issue. It continued to die long before the battery was drained. I called Verizon to troubleshoot, they said Candy Crush was draining my battery though it didn’t come up on the battery test. I tried the software fix by plugging it into the computer and it would only ever get to 30%. They sent me a new phone.
Within 12 hours of getting it it restarted without prompt. I was working with a client later that day on an app and it died at 42%. I removed my SD card, deleted candy crush, and recharged the phone. Tonight it died at 30%. When I plugged it in it showed it was at 30%. Verizon suggested I get another battery as maybe the battery I bought from Amazon is faulty. Considering I just got and set up the phone, I haven’t factory reset it. I did that multiple times with the previous phone and it continued to die. I’m quite frustrated with this. Could my SIM card be an issue? I’m kind of at a loss and considering this is a replacement phone I’m guessing another replacement may have the same issues. Any ideas? — Becky
Solution: Hi Becky. If a replacement phone continues to have the same problem as the old one, the problem must either be on the battery or a third party app you installed. To fix the issue, try wiping the cache partition first. Afterwards, boot the phone in safe mode and observe the phone for a few days. Safe mode will block all third party apps and services from running so it’s a good way to determine if the problem is being caused by one of the installed apps. You need a longer observation period for this case since it may a while for you to drain the battery. If the problem won’t occur while the phone is set to safe mode, that’s a clear proof that our hunch is correct. In this case, you must restart the phone and start narrowing down the cause. Remove third party apps individually and make sure that you observe how the phone works after each uninstall. This may take a long time but it’s the only way to pinpoint the culprit.
To boot in safe mode, follow these steps:
- Turn off the phone completely.
- Press and hold the Power key.
- Once ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- The phone will restart but keep the Volume Down button pressed.
- Once the phone has finished restarting, ‘Safe mode’ will be display in the lower-left corner of the screen.
- You may now release the Volume Down button.
I was so hoping you could help as I am at my wits end. It feels like my Google App crashing started with the fiasco of Google not communicating to its members that the Google Audible Search ready indicator no longer sounds a tone which lets you know when to speak. The Google forum and other forums are just full of so many complaints due to this scenario. This led to many members uninstalling and reinstalling the app, initially looking for a solution until now that the participants figured out this is intentional and Google is not looking for a fix.
At any rate, here is what is happening on my end. About a few weeks ago, only my Google App would crash on my Samsung Note and I would notice at this point that over the Google App shortcut it would read “Using % 1$ s for Google…” and an error message would pop up reflecting “Unfortunately, No apps able to do that has stopped.”
So I have tried many tips such as clearing some memory which left me about 1 Gigabyte, thinking it is due to memory shortage by clearing it via the RAM in Task Manager, as I am not sure what the shortcut reference actually meant. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I went into Safe Mode although not sure how this would help as the Google app appears to be the only one crashing. Also, cleared the cache numerous times, including the system cache and the data a couple of times.
What is ironic is that when the Google App crashes, I end up uninstalling and reinstalling the app which always shows downloading and installing successfully. The app works for a while, sometimes a day or two and then goes down again.
I would really appreciate your help as I am not sure what else to do and really do not want to do a factory reset. I thought you might have some stronger input than the forum members would have, hence, your name. I have seen some of your helpful tips.
Calling or emailing Google will not help as the employees do not have enough expertise which is even reflected on Google’s forum. Perhaps, the shortcut read “Using % 1$ s for Google” is a clue you could interpret. Please help. — Mary
Solution: Hi Mary. We’ve received some reports about the main Google app crashing as well as seen this same issue in other Android forums but there’s no discernable pattern in all of them to allow us pinpoint the problem. It seems to happen regardless of your phone. Some non-Samsung users are reporting it as well so pinning down the true cause is such a headache. This lack of common denominator in all cases may also be the reason why there’s no effective solution from Google even after this time.
Frankly, the “Using % 1$ s for Google” hint you provide does not make any sense to us. That can be a random error when a specific Google app behavior happens, or it can be a generic message of something. Try wiping the cache and data of Google Services Framework app and all other Google apps in your phone to see if it will improve the situation. To do that, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.
If the procedure above does not have any positive effect, do a factory reset.
