Although this model is more than a year old already it is still one of the best Android smartphones available in the market today. It is being used as a reliable daily driver by a lot of people owing to the fact that it is powerful enough to handle almost all tasks thrown at it. There are however instances when certain issues can occur on this device which we will address today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy Note 5 not turning on after charging issue & other related problems.

Note 5 Not Turning On After Charging
Problem: hi I have my galaxy note 5, I charged it then used it to facebook, and then leave it with almost 80%, but after 2-3hours I get my phone and see that it’s dead and there is no sign of charging. i checked my charging cable to see if it’s working or not. the cable is working fine in other devices. i tried to plug it on PC, but no signs of recognizing. nothing happened. i also tried volume down, power keys, menu, but still no sign of life in my phone. I don’t know what to do now. please help me. thank you.
Solution: Try simulating a battery pull first as this usually fixes issues such as this. Press and hold the power button and volume down button simultaneously for at least 12 seconds.Use the Volume down button to scroll to the Power Down option then use the Home key to select.
If you are still not getting any response then do the following troubleshooting steps listed below.
- Try to start the phone in Safe Mode. If you can start the phone in this mode then check if the phone charges by connecting it to its charger. Once the phone charges try to restart your phone.
- Check if the phone starts in recovery mode. If you are able to access this mode then I recommend that you do a factory reset from here. Take note that this will delete your phone data.
- Try cleaning the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air. Make sure to remove any dirt or debris that might be lodged in this port as it could cause charging issues. Charge the phone for at least 20 minutes using a different charging cord and wall charger.
If the above steps don’t fix the problem then you should have your phone checked at a service center as this could already be a hardware related problem.
Note 5 Not Charging Via USB
Problem: NOTE 5 dual sim 64 GB . Since two weeks, unexpected freezes with Facebook, YouTube and other apps started showing up. First problem seen was failure to charge via USB. It progressed to constant flickering of screen and charging indicator. Took it to service center who didn’t check the hardware. They did some sort of a hard reset and gave it back to me on the same day. Very next day onwards same issues have started showing up. I haven’t rooted, there is no fall or water damage. What should I do next?
Solution: If the issue still occurs after performing a factory reset then this could be caused by a faulty hardware component.
For the issue regarding the phone not charging via a USB port you will need to clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air. Make sure to take out any dirt or debris present in the port. Once this is done try using different charging cords to charge your phone to a USB port. If the problem remains the you have to bring the phone to a service center and have the charging port checked.
The flickering screen and constant freezes might also be caused be related to the charging port issue that the phone has. However, you should also have the phone display assembly checked as this could be causing the problem.
Note 5 Refuses To Charge
Problem: Hi, Recently my Note 5 started refusing different charging methods. The only change of note is that the GEAR VR app seemed to have some issues as it would kick on constantly. I cannot disable it, but by Force Stopping it it would no longer pop up. However, after that the charging issues began. Now the only way it will charge is when I have it plugged into my truck. Not sure if there is an easy fix for this.
Solution: Several other owners of this device who are experiencing the same issue have found out that the problem is caused by a faulty charging port. Some issue with this port sends a signal to the phone that activated the Gear VR app. To check if this is what’s happening with your phone try to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then it’s good since the problem might just be caused by a software glitch.
If the issue still remains then you should try cleaning the charging port using a can of compressed air. Make sure to remove any dirt or debris stuck in this port as this could cause charging issues. Should the issue still remain then I suggest you have the phone checked at a service center.
Note 5 Battery Drain
Problem: Have a note 5 and have battery drain issues. With the phone being idle I lose about 5% in an hour. Have disabled many app background data. I keep Wifi on and bluetooth. With a day of moderate use I get my battery down to 20 odd % in 12 hours. Can you help.
Solution: What you need to check first in this case is if an app is causing this issue. Sometimes rouge apps or apps that have not been updated yet can cause this kind of issue. The best way to check if a third party app is causing this problem is to start the phone in Safe Mode. When in Safe Mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are prevented from running. Check if you still experience the battery drain issue in this mode. If the problem doesn’t occur then it could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the problem still occurs even in Safe Mode then I suggest that you backup your phone data then perform the following steps listed below.
- Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. Check if the issue still occurs.
- Do a factory reset.
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring the phone to a service center and have it checked. The battery might already be weak and needs to be replaced.
Note 5 Not Working After Drop
Problem: Dropped phone, flat on its back, from waist height. In a decent case. screen and outer casing not cracked. Black screen, solid blue notification light, won’t charge
Solution: It looks like the drop might have damaged some component inside the phone. Try simulating a battery pull and see if the phone responds. To do this just press and hold the power button and volume down button simultaneously for at least 12 seconds then check if the phone restarts. If the problem persists then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
Note 5 Stuck In Android Is Updating Screen
Problem: System update for Note 5, through Bell. Stuck on green “android is starting” screen that has two animated gears. First time through optimized 68 of 68 apps, then gears stopped turning. Reset by holding power and volume down. On reboot went to same screen, but froze on ” 14 of 14″ apps. I think nougat version of android
Solution: Try starting the phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition. Restart the phone then check if the issue still occurs. If the problem remains then you should consider doing a factory reset from the recovery mode. Take note that this will delete your phone data so make sure to have a backup copy first before proceeding with this.
