Hello. Wondering if you could help with a recent problem I’ve been having on my Galaxy S6. Couldn’t find it in any of your sections. The problem arose around the time I updated my software, but keeps getting worse by the day. The issue is that apps randomly crash. It’s not limited to specific apps, even when I’m in a text message or my contact list, all the sudden the system exits the window. It’s almost as if the back button is pressedÂ (theoretically) because the windows keep going back one by one until the android home screen is reached. This happens rather fast though. Sometimes happens 5 times in a row and sometimes it doesn’t happen for like 10 minutes. I’ve done a soft reset, restarted, and also cleaned my cache, but nothing seems to help. The kernel version is 3.10.61-9408889, if needed. I’d appreciate any help. Also, noticed you guys are in Tustin…shout-out to the OC (just moved to Budapest)!! Cheers. — Sebastian
Solution: Hi Sebastian. The usual dose of troubleshooting when dealing with problems after a major Android overhaul, like when updating from Lollipop to Marshmallow, are the following:
- refreshing the cache partition
- updating of apps
- booting in safe mode
- factory reset
If you’ve already wiped the cache partition and factory reset the device, make sure that you update or only install apps that are compatible with the operating system. You can also boot in safe mode to check if the phone works normally when all third party apps and services are suspended. To do that, follow these steps:
- Make sure your phone is powered off
- Once your device is switched off, press and hold the Volume down key.
- While continuously holding down the Volume key, press the Power key briefly to power up your device.
- Your phone will now power up in Safe Mode. By then you can stop pressing the Volume down key.
- Swipe the screen to show the Safe mode icon. When you see this icon, it denotes you’re in Safe mode and can use your phone as normal but without any third party applications running or available.
- Observe the phone for at least 24 hours to see a difference. If the phone works normally, that is, all pre-installed apps do not crash at all, then that’s proof that a third party app is the cause. To remove the problem, you must uninstall third party apps one by one. See to it that you observe how the phone works for a few hours after each uninstallation so you’ll know if you’ve removed the erratic app.
I have a Samsung S6 which is just over a year old. It is in good condition, I’ve looked after it well. However my son tried to charge it with an iPhone 5 charger which has disabled me from using the charging port to charge it. I bought a wireless charger pad which has been working well up until the past 2 days. My phone will register the charge then seems to lose connection and this happens all night to the point it has no charge from connecting and disconnecting. I have tried using different positions, different ports, etc. The only thing that seems to work is plugging the charger in a computer usb port and charging that way – though still temperamental. I don’t know what to do. I have insurance but that means I will be without a phone for days until they send me a new phone. — Belinda
Solution: Hi Belinda. If you really want to have a permanent fix for your problem, we suggest that you go with phone replacement. There’s no way you can fix a broken charging port with software solutions, which are the only ones we provide here. Any replacement process can’t be done within the day so you must accept the fact that you will need to sacrifice a few days without your phone.
Problem #3: Galaxy S6 won’t charge properly when the phone is on | Galaxy S6 only charges when it is powered down
Hello. So I have been having an issue as of late of my Galaxy S6 having some quirky charging issues. When it started I had a battery case connected to it and it, in itself, wasn’t working properly. It would use the bypass to charge the phone on a regular basis, but every now and then neither the case nor phone would charge with the case on. So I chose to get rid of it and go back to a basic protective case because my phone would charge. But fast forwarding to now, it is back to being really quirky with no case at all. Every now and then my phone will drop fast in battery life, down to 15% setting the low battery life mode into effect. So I’ll plug it into anyone of my Samsung chargers, and it either won’t seem to recognize it, or it will say it’s charging, but the estimated time to charge will be way off. E.g. 61% estimated time until fully charged 7 minutes. Anyhow, moving forward, no matter what the case is. If I shut it off and and let it charge without the OS running, it will give me the actual battery percentage and it has absolutely no issues with any cable. So any ideas on whether it’s an update? there has been a lot on my AT&T variant, or if there is something within Android causing it. I’d greatly appreciate an idea of how to get this wrinkle out. Solution: Hi Josh. First of all, we want to make it a point that Lithium-based batteries like the one in your Galaxy S6 does not maintain the same capacity over time. After a few hundred charging cycles, the battery level going from 0% – 100% and back to 0% again, a Lithium-ion battery will start showing significant performance issues. These issues include:
- shorter usage time (fast battery drain)
- overheating (rare)
- Physical deformity or bulging (you can’t observe this in a Galaxy S6 phone since the battery pack is non-removable)
- longer charging time
Battery aging is the main source of power-related issues for most smartphone users. A Lithium-ion battery provides power to your device by harnessing the chemistry that happened inside the cell — movement of ions between positive and negative electrodes. In a perfect world, these regular ion movements should take forever but in reality, there are factors that prevents them from happening. The thing is, your phone’s battery starts degrading right after it’s built. Even when not being used, a lithium-based battery constantly loses capacity. Thus, the more you use it, the faster its performance degrades. Battery makers would usually give their products an average lifespan of 300-500 charging cycles. If you charge your phone at least once everyday, you should then notice signs of battery performance degradation after about 6 months of use.
If the battery appears to charge properly only when you turn the phone off, that can be sign that a lot of background services and processes may be running at once on your phone during charging sessions. We suggest that you weed out some unnecessary apps to minimize battery drain while the phone is on. If you have an app that you haven’t used in the last 2 weeks, you don’t probably need it. Try to keep your list of apps as short as possible. Remember, the more apps you install, the higher the chance of their associated services constantly running in the background, draining the battery. This is true for both pre-installed apps, also known as bloatwares (the ones provided by your carrier, Samsung, and Google), and third party apps. Make sure to disable pre-installed apps you don’t need and uninstall third party apps that are not really useful. Alternatively, you can try to boot the phone in safe mode while charging to force the phone not to run third party apps and services. Refer to the steps above on how to use it.
If you’ve had your phone for over a year now and the battery drain issue has already gone so bad that our suggestions won’t work anymore, find a way to have the battery or the phone itself replaced.
Hi. My brother recently bought an original Samsung S6 Edge from a friend who purchased it on contract from our service provider, Vodacom. My bro took the phone away to have the battery replaced by someone and when the phone switched on it had a few Chinese writings on there, which is strange as it is an English phone and there were no other options to change it to English (UK). Later on the phone just randomly started switching off and the IMEI number disappeared and went to O. How can this issue be fixed to receive the IMEI number again, as the phone can’t stay on for longer than 30 seconds. Can you please assist? — 3076078
Solution: Hi 3076078. We can’t see the logic of a battery replacement erasing or modifying some critical software information. We’ve done battery replacement on our own Galaxy S6 phone ourselves and it didn’t change any proprietary software details. In your case, the guy who may have replaced the battery for you may have given you a different phone, or an imitation Galaxy S6. You must go back to him/her to fix the issue you’re having.
Good day, I’d like some help with my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. I updated last night and had a 330MB update. After the update I drained the battery completely, then I plugged it in (Samsung charger but slow one, not the original one for this phone), fell asleep, then in the morning i tried turning it on, and it won’t turn on. plugged it in and nothing shows, no blinks, tried recovery, reset, safe mode, nothing works. When it is unplugged, it stays warm even 1 hour after i unplugged, but nothing works, computer does not recognize it. Tried plugging it into my dad’s Note 4 charger, and still nothing, it gets warm but nothing shows on screen, no blinks. I’d appreciate some info on this. Thanks. — Kerwin
Solution: Hi Kerwin. If restarting to any of the other boot modes does not power on the phone did not help, there may be an unknown hardware malfunction behind the problem. You must submit the phone for repair so it can be checked.
For reference to other users, we include here again the boots modes that you can do to try to resolve the problem:
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Problem #6: Galaxy S6 keeps showing “Custom Binary blocked by FRP” error and “unauthorized actions” notification
Hi. I took a phone upgrade (Samsung S6) from my carrier (Three) and gave the phone to my wife who is on Vodafone. I got it unlocked in one of those unlock shops. One time the phone ran out of charge and when recharged and switched on I got the Custom Binary blocked by FRP error. Before it powered down she was also getting an “unauthorized actions” notification. I don’t know if this is to do with the unlock or an issue with Samsung KNOX (my knowledge of this is what I have read online – I could never be accused of being a tech!!).
Anyway I brought it back to the shop and got it fixed and we always keep it charged up. This is a pain so I’m now going to prepay the carrier and get the unlock code. I read elsewhere on your site that FRP is also caused by having a Google account linked to phone (she is logged onto Google). I have put in Android version as Lollipop as your questionnaire requires a version but I’m not sure what version it is.
My questions are as follows:
- With the phone powered on working as normal and we do a factory reset, will it work or will we get the Custom Binary issue?
- Would she need to log out of Google in order to do a factory reset?
- Would we be better to turn it off and try and do factory reset using Power/Home/Vol Up?
- Any idea if the “unauthorized actions” would be to do with the unlock or the phone itself (I guess if reset were to work and still get notification then it is the phone itself…)
- If factory reset won’t fix it, what will?

Solution: Hi Sean. First of all, we want to make it clear that all we can do in your case is speculate since we don’t exactly know what software modifications were done on your device. Any unofficial modification of a Samsung Galaxy S or Note software can potentially trip the Knox counter, thus resulting to “unauthorized actions” notification. Rooting and flashing of custom ROM/Operating System are some of the common reasons why Knox gets tripped as well. If the “unlock shop” you visited performed any modification, it’s possible that such may have contributed to the error.
The Custom Binary blocked by FRP error on the other hand is a specific error that only shows up if a user attempts to do a factory reset. Factory Reset Protection is supposed to prevent unauthorized factory reset of a Samsung device by asking for the owner’s Google account first. FRP is automatically activated once a Google account has been added on the device.
So now let’s answer your questions individually.
- With the phone powered on working as normal and we do a factory reset, will it work or will we get the Custom Binary issue? As mentioned above, once you do a factory reset and there’s a logged in Google account in the device, the FRP message should prompt you for the Google credentials.
- Would she need to log out of Google in order to do a factory reset? There’s no need to log out of her Google account. Just see to it that she enters the Google account username and password once the FRP prompt shows up.
- Would we be better to turn it off and try and do factory reset using Power/Home/Vol Up? There are two means to factory reset your Galaxy S6. One is by going under the phone’s Settings app, and the other via Recovery menu or bootloader. Both of them will restore all software settings back to default although the latter can also remove root access if your phone was rooted. If your phone is running some custom configuration or was rooted, we suggest that you factory reset the device via Settings app.
- Any idea if the “unauthorized actions” would be to do with the unlock or the phone itself (I guess if reset were to work and still get notification then it is the phone itself…) There’s no for us to know for sure but there’s a chance that the shop you went to may have done more than simply network unlocked the phone. You have to talk to them to see if this error is just a side effect of their software modifications.
- If factory reset won’t fix it, what will? Again, the answer lies on what modifications were done. The only party that can help you is the shop that helped you unlock the device. Factory reset may or may not fix the errors. You can try to do it but we suggest that you consult the guys from the shop to prevent losing any configuration that may be erased after the procedure.
