I have had my Galaxy for a few months and have never had any problems. My Galaxy won’t turn on. It’s just a complete black screen. There is no water damage, no cracks, not even a scratch. I’ve tried holding the power, home button and volume up. I’ve also tried holding the power, home button, and volume down. When I tried the home, power, and volume up, I got a white, kinda purple light that stays on in the LED section, not the screen itself. And I have called Sprint’s tech, but they tell me to send it in. I don’t have the money to replace it so I’m hoping you can help me. I would like to avoid getting a new phone. — Ashley
Solution: Hi Ashley. Whether you like it or not, you will most probably send the phone in for repair unless it turns on to alternate boot modes. Below are the complete steps that you can try in this case. Remember, if the phone remains unresponsive after trying all of them, send it in for repair.
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
I have a Galaxy S6 (Verizon) and I am puzzled as to why this phone will not read texts via bluetooth in my car. I had Windows phones for years and they worked flawlessly. My current car is a 2015 VW GTI (w/o Android Auto). The first phone I used with this car was a Nokia Lumia Icon and it read texts and other voice commands without a problem. I then got a Motorola Droid Maxx 2 and it also worked, although not as well. But it would read texts and respond to “OK Google.” My Galaxy will not do anything with text messages via bluetooth. Phone calls and music streaming, yes. But texts, no. I recently downloaded the latest Android Auto app hoping that would connect, but still nothing. Is this a Samsung thing? Is it fixable? Is there a workaround? — Dave
Solution: Hi Dave. As far as we know, Samsung Galaxy S6 devices supports multiple Bluetooth profiles including Message Access Profile (MAP), which is the most common profile used in many automotives, to allow transmission of SMS between an installed car kit and a mobile device. Android also started supporting MAP ever since KitKat was released so this is clearly not a, S6 problem. This means that as long as your car’s bluetooth system also supports MAP, your S6 should work with it as well. Try checking your car kit’s bluetooth system and see if it’s compatible with your S6.
Hi. My Samsung Galaxy S6 Active was working perfectly fine just last night. I got it around last August. I was using it last night and I accidentally dropped it a short distance from the ground and it immediately shut off. When I tried to turn it on it wouldn’t respond, so my next move was to the charger to see if that would work. Well, I plugged in my charger, and the lightning bolt charging sign came up, then a few seconds later, the [0%] sign came up. I got worried as the phone was on around 25-30% when I was using it. Well, I left it on the charger overnight to see if it would work, it didn’t. When I woke up it was still on 0%. Now that I’ve gotten home after leaving it on the charger ALL DAY, it’s still at 0%. BUT, if I have it connected to the charger, it’ll work. But it still says 0%. I dropped it in the shower about a month or so ago. Could it be water damaged? If so do I need to go get a new battery or is it within the phone itself? Thanks! — Casey
Solution: Hi Casey. If the phone will only work now if it’s connected to a charger, the fall may have permanently damaged the motherboard or other components inside. The best thing that you can do now is to save your important files, contacts, etc. (preferably to the cloud), then submit the phone for repair. If it’s still under replacement warranty, it’s better if you can use it to get a new phone.
Hi I suddenly noticed that when I plug my fast charger into my S6 the function to turn fast charge on and off in settings goes grey and turns off fast charge. I have been unable to use fast charge for a few months now and started after I done the Marshmallow update. The phone only charges on normal charge when the USB is plugged in or I have to rely on my wireless charging plate. I have bought a new fast charge USB lead but when i plug it into my phone I get a message saying “please use original charger.” I’m using the original fast charge plug, brand new USB lead and have also tried my partners S6 fast charger and same issues.
I called into Carphone Warehouse and the technical guy tried his and same thing happened to his S7. Any ideas? — Cfbrodie
Solution: Hi Cfbrodie. In most cases where fast charging stopped working, the common reason is always a bad charging port. If your issue coincidentally happened right after a Marshmallow update, the cause in this case may be an unknown Marshmallow bug. Try wiping the cache partition first to see if it makes any difference. Here’s how:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
You can also try booting in safe mode to see if a third party app may be to blame. Do this while charging so you’ll see if there’s an effect. Follow these steps on what to do:
- Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
- Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
- Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
- You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.
Finally, if nothing will change, consider wiping the phone via factory reset. If nothing will change still, you can assume that hardware failure is to blame.
Hi there, first sorry for my possible English mistakes, I’m from Germany. 😉 Here’s my problem: While listening to streaming music, the amount of RAM lacks. When starting music, I have nearly 1GB free RAM. After some minutes of listening it’s shrunk down to 200-300 MB and my device is nearly unusable. Of course I’ve Googled for this issue and I’ve tried several things:
- using other apps
- using WLAN or GSM/LTE
- disabled power savings
- using “Smart Manager” to free RAM — only frees some 100-200 MB
- cleared cache partition during boot (several times)
Because of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Hardware, i could not test removing the battery and i’ll try to avoid a full factory reset (which might be also not working). so… 🙁 any help is welcome! — Harry
Solution: Hi Harry. The Galaxy S6 is equipped with 3GB RAM. If an app can use that much RAM when streaming music, the problem either lies on the app itself, or the phone’s hardware. We don’t know what you mean exactly by “my device is nearly unusable” but if you’re saying that your S6’s performance is severely slowed to the point of total unresponsiveness, you should be able to remedy the situation by pressing the Recent Apps button (the one on the left side of the Home button) so you can close other apps. But again, we must say that if 3GB RAM is almost used up most of the time, that’s not normal. There may be other apps that constantly runs in the background. Try to factory reset your device then install this music streaming app you’re having problems with. With only this app installed, try to replicate the issue to see a difference. If music streaming works normally, that’s a confirmation that there are many memory hogging apps in there.
Where to start. Okay, I have a 9-month old Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. Now the problems. The constant installing of new apps without my permission, which I specified in settings. It has recently begun doubling every photo of late. Worst of all, it has now twice done some sort of reset while off at night. When i turn it on, the screen layout is that of when I first purchased it, however that i could live with. It also has deleted my contacts, my saved bookmarks as well as saved sign in information. There’s more but that’s the major problems. I don’t understand what is going on. — Dana
Solution: Hi Dana. The first thing that you want to do here is to ensure that you start fresh. There’s no more effective way to do that than by factory reset. These are the steps on how to factory reset you S6:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
Once you’ve done the reset, you then want to ensure that your device won’t be able to install apps outside of Google Play Store. Here’s how to do that:
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down to Lock screen and security.
- Make sure to turn off Unknown sources.
Now that you’ve wiped the phone clean and locked it from third party app sources, everything else depends on how you take care of your device. As a user, it’s your responsibility to know if the app you install is safe or not. We know that’s easily said than done but you can actually do it if you just exert more effort in it. You can do that by going over your list of apps and installing only the ones from reputable developers. Try to avoid installing games from unknown developers as these products are most likely booby-trapped with ads and malware. The same goes to the rest of your apps. Stick to official and mainstream apps only. For example, if you are fond of online shopping, try to install official apps only. Remember, when it comes to Android environment, malware and viruses are only spread by apps.
Right now, we think that your phone is infected with malware so make sure that you follow all our suggestions above.
Hi. My phone’s notifications aren’t working properly. My twitter notifications aren’t showing, in detail i do receive them but my phone vibrates for a split second (no pop up notification), then i don’t see anything.
Also some of my apps at the home page aren’t showing the notification bubbles on them. Like my emails aren’t telling me i have emails to look at but i already know there are new emails. Facebook as well, although Facebook works fine but few notifications don’t work so I’m not worried about it. I looked online about this stuff and i can’t seem to find anything related to this. I’ve restarted my phone multiple times, reinstalled apps multiple times. I haven’t factory reset it yet. I’ve gone through many different processes trying to fix this problem but nothing has worked. Solution: Hi Ian. Android Marshmallow gives more options to the user on how to better manage notifications on their devices. The problem is, the more options to tinker with, the higher the chance of users encountering “issues” like the one you’re having. Make sure that you do a little research on how to handle notifications in Marshmallow. You can search Google for terms such as “notification settings marshmallow,” “do not disturb android marshmallow,” “android marshmallow notification features,” among others. Information you’ll gather from this simple research will give you an idea whether or not you may have messed up your phone’s notification settings.
If you never tinkered with your device in the first place, just do a factory reset to restore all software settings back to default.
