Note 4 Shuts Off Randomly When Using Apps

Problem: The problem began with the phone shutting off randomly when I would open an app (any app) and it would turn back on by itself. It has progressively gotten worse though. It now shuts off after I open an app and gets stuck on a loop. It brings up the Samsung Galaxy 4 screen and then vibrates turns black and brings up the same screen over and over. The only way I can open an app is to have it attached to a wall charger despite the battery level. It has been at 100% and has happened. I have tried some of the suggestions for other power problems on here but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Solution: The first thing that you should look into whenever the phone restarts randomly is if the problem is caused by a glitch in the phone software. For this you will need to start the phone first in Safe Mode. When your phone is working in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. This makes it easy for you to determine if the issue is caused by an app you downloaded. If the problem doesn’t occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the issue still occurs even in Safe Mode then you should follow the steps listed below.

  • Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. This will delete the temporary system data which could be causing this problem.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Don’t install any apps on your phone after the reset has completed. Instead, try to check first if the issue still occurs.

Should the above steps fail to fix the problem then it’s time to check the phone hardware. Does your phone have a microSD card installed? Try removing it to check if this is causing the problem. You should also check if the issue occurs when your phone is connected to its charger. If it doesn’t then this might be caused by a weak battery.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Not Powering Up Or Charging

Problem: is suddenly not powering up or charging. On sunday it was fine, I used the phone and drained the battery and have not been able to power up the unit successfully since. I am unable to access the device, I’ve tried several steps (plugging phone in with no battery, pressing power button many times with / without battery inserted, tried several chargers to PC & wall adapter). I am unable to try to boot to safe mode or recovery mode because it doesn’t power on or recognize any chargers. I have 3 chargers at my house, none of them charge my phone suddenly.  I went to Best Buy just a few hours ago and the Samsung Fast Charger that the samsung tech had charged my device to 23%. I hadn’t tried to power on the unit, it just charged at the store. So I purchased the fast charger and went home. Powered on the device and it stopped mid-boot flashed the led light on and the phone just shut off. And I am back to square one, the Note won’t even recognize or show charging, even the fast charger now.   I just purchased a new battery that will be delivered tomorrow. Maybe that could be the issue? I already have 2 OEM batteries that I’ve also tried, I just find it really weird that both of those batteries aren’t working and all chargers won’t power up or charge the batteries.  Thanks for any help or tips you can send me. I can try to send you an update if the battery fixes my issue. Im hoping it does just so I can extract data and upgrade to a new more reliable phone.

Solution: If you have already tried different batteries and chargers on your phone and the issue still remains then this could very well be caused by an internal component that has failed to work. This could be caused by a problem with the charging or power IC. The best way to fix this problem is to have it checked at a service center that’s able to do board level repairs.

Note 4 Switches Off At 30% Power

Problem: Hello I have an issue with the power levels on my Note 4. I have read through most of the post regarding battery issues and switching off at around 30-20%. I have a 2 year old Note 4 model SM-N910F running Android version 6.0.1 baseband version N910FXXU1DPC3. I have bought a new battery, done a factory reset and wiped the cache partition.  The new battery has given me a little bit more time of use but I am still having the phone switch off/die at around 20-30%.  Is there anything else I can do? I ordered the note 7 and had to send it back so this phone needs to last until the Note 8 comes out! Thanks in advance.

Solution: Try starting your phone in Safe Mode then check if the phone still switches off at around the 30% battery level mark. If it doesn’t then the problem could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

You should also check if a corrupt temporary system data is causing this problem by wiping the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.

If the above steps fail to fix the issue then it could be caused by a defective power IC. I suggest that you have your phone checked at a service center capable of doing board level repairs if this is the case.

Note 4 Battery Draining Fast After Marshmallow Update

Problem: i upgraded my phone to marshmallow with samsung kies. about a week later it’s dying faster. it says that its charging via usb when it’s plugged into a wall outlet. it constantly says that my battery is dying faster than it can charge. i’ve switched batteries and have tried the hard reset. nothing seems to work. can you please help me?

Solution: If the phone detects that it’s charging via USB instead of a phone outlet then there might be an issue with the charging port. Try cleaning this port using a can of compressed air. Make sure to remove any dirt or debris that’s stuck in this port as this could interfere with the charging process. Try charging your phone. If the problem still occurs try using a different charging cord and wall charger.

Should the above steps fail to fix the problem then I suggest that you bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Freezes Then Shuts Off When Using Apps

Problem: My phone shuts off even with full battery like for example if I wanna go on snapchat and then go on Facebook and then I receive a text and start texting it freezes and shuts off or sometimes I would have to remove the battery to have it working again. Sometimes it gets stuck in downloading update and I remove the battery. I feel like I can’t do too many things on my phone because it shuts off it didn’t use to do that. Also sometimes the screen won’t come on when I press the home button I have to press it a lot off times should I change the battery?

Solution: The first thing that you should do in this case is to start your phone fresh so as to determine if these issues are caused by a glitch in the phone software. You will need to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Once the reset is complete try to check if any of the issues still occur ( when doing this don’t install any new apps yet in your device instead just use the preinstalled apps).

If the phone still freezes and shuts off when using apps then try to check if the same issue occurs when the phone is connected to its charger. You should also check if the issue occurs when a new battery is used. This allows you to verify if the phone battery is causing the problem.

If the screen issue still occurs then you might be looking at a display problem. I recommend that you have this checked at a service center if this is the case.

Note 4 Not Turning On

Problem: I bought a note 4 for my brother who hardly ever used it when the year passed it would not turn on I bought a new battery and ever bought the charger that charges wireless in case the port from charging wasn’t working all to no avail. I don’t know what else to do I tried all your suggestions and nothing works can you tell me where I can send it to see if it can be fixed? What ever information you can give me is much appreciated.Thank you in advance.

Solution: It looks like this problem is caused by some internal component of the phone that isn’t working. You will need to bring the device to a service center nearest your location that does board level repairs and have it checked.

Note 4 Only Turns On When Charger Is Connected

Problem: When the batt is at 40 percentage, it shuts off by itself and the power light just keeps blinking. Turned the power button on and waited for the main screen but no luck. The screen is black just like its completely off. Did actually taken the batt off and waited for 10 secs but still no luck. The only time that the screen went completely on is when i plugged the charger in. Do I need to replace a new batt if that’s the case?

Solution: You should definitely try using a new battery. If the issue still occurs even with a new battery installed then try starting your phone in recovery mode. If you are able to access this mode then you should do a factory reset from here. Take note that this erases your phone data.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

Note 4 Keeps On Restarting After Getting Wet

Problem: My phone fell in water. I took it out as fast as I could took the battery out and placed the phone in rice for about 48 hours. After the 48 hours the phone worked perfectly for almost 3 weeks then it started to b reboot itself.. I did soft reset, factory reset, changed the motherboard and upgraded the device firmware to 6.0.1 and still my phone keeps restarting itself..

Solution: Since this appears to be a hardware issue already the best way to proceed is to have the phone checked at a service center that does board level repairs. Some of the factors that could cause this issue are a damaged charging port, defective power IC, or a bad motherboard.
