Troubleshooting charging issue with Galaxy S7 Edge due to possible liquid damage
Before I tell you the steps on how to deal with this issue, I want to share with you the actual message sent by one of our readers that best describes this issue so that you will have a clearer idea how it occurs.
“Hi guys! I happen to find your contact details online as I was trying to find a solution to the problem that recently occurred. First off, my phone is a brand new Galaxy S7 Edge, which is supposed to be waterproof, but when it got dipped in water, it stopped charging. Actually, I accidentally dropped it in a basin full of water but I immediately fished it out. It still on when I got it but when I tried charging it, it detects the charger but gets disconnected and won’t charge. The battery is almost drained so I badly need a charge and I don’t have a wireless charger. Can you help?”
There are two situations we need to consider here. If the phone turned off after it got in contact with water, then it’s a serious issue. However, if it remained powered on, then it might be just a simple charging problem. So, our troubleshooting will be based on these situations.
If your Galaxy S7 Edge turned off immediately after getting wet, then the water may have reached some critical components and messed up the circuit. It will also be confirmed if it won’t respond when the charger is plugged in.
In this case, do not attempt to turn on and charge your phone again as it will make the problem worse. Electricity and water don’t mix but when both get in contact, the components are the ones that will suffer. You should know some chips in your phone are fragile not to mention capacitors can easily get damaged if there is a short-circuit.
In other words, if you dunk your phone into a basin of water and it turned off and won’t charge, immediately visit a technician and have it checked and cleaned up. However, if it’s currently impossible to visit a shop, then here are some things you need to do:
- Remove the SIM card and the microSD card and leave the tray on the outside.
- Remove all third-party cases and accessories if there’s any.
- Let the phone sit upright so that the water can escape through the USB port.
- Put the phone in a bowl of rice for a couple of days or until you can send it for check up.
On the other hand, if the phone didn’t turn off when it got in contact with water but refused to charge when plugged in, you don’t have to worry so much about it as the water may not have gone too far in. However, you still need to do some things to prevent it from messing up your phone.
- Hold the phone upright to let water escape through the USB port. When it comes to water damage, it usually enters through the USB port so let it escape through it by holding it upright and leave it sit for 30 minutes or an hour.
- Using a Q tip, try cleaning the USB port but continue to hold it upright so that the water won’t go in. You may also use a dry cloth to absorb water residue on the outside but never shake the phone or blow through the port. The point of this is to prevent the water from reaching electronic components inside the phone.
- Place the phone in a bowl of rice but still set it upright. This will get rid of all water residue inside the phone. However, I suggest you leave it alone for at least a day to be sure.
- Now, check your cable for moist on both ends. Make sure it is dry and that all the pins on both ends are fine. Bent pins are sometime the cause why the phone won’t charge.
- Lastly, check your charger and verify it’s working properly. You may try charging other devices and physically inspect it for signs of water damage, burn, etc.
After doing all these and your device still refuses to charge, then you should let a technician check it for you. While it’s far from being a firmware issue, I suggest you still do the master reset not just to rule out that possibility but also erase all your personal information.
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
- Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
- The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
Should the problem remain after the reset, then you need a technician to take care of the problem for you.
