One of the most important part of a smartphone is its display. Without it you won’t be able to interact with the device. Some phone’s in the market have great displays while others tend to use average displays. The #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 in particular when it was released two years ago had one of the best screens among the smartphones available in the market. Today, it still has a great display. While the display of this phone is quite good there are instances when issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 black screen with notifications working issue & other related problems.

S5 Black Screen With Notifications Working
Problem: The screen is black, everything else is working. I am getting calls, I can feel taking screenshots by pressing power and home button. When connected to a computer every detail in the phone is showing. Only problem is black screen. That too once in 8 to 10 hours it pops up and everything can be seen but again in a minute or two it goes off.
Solution: In this type of issue I recommend that you backup your phone data ( use a computer with Kies or Smart Switch to do the backup) then perform a factory reset. You can do the reset from the recovery mode or when you can view the screen again. Once the factory reset has completed try to check if the issue occurs again. If it does then you will need to bring your phone to a service center and have it checked since the display could be damaged.
S5 Screen Bottom Half Blinking
Problem: This has been happening for awhile but I just let it be until now it’s been a problem: when the screen is low brightness the bottom half will blink (mostly noticed with white backgrounds) but just now when I go to turn it on the bottom half turns into green and gold moving horizontal lines for a second. Same when I turn it off. I would rather not get a new phone at this time.
Solution: The flickering screen issue at low brightness is a common occurrence for devices using Super AMOLED displays. Since your phone also exhibits other issues such as the green and gold horizontal lines that appears then what you should do is to check if the phone software is causing this issue.
The first thing you need to do is to turn off the automatic brightness setting and manually adjust the brightness level to its maximum point. Try to check if the issue still occurs. If it doesn’t then there might be a problem with the sensor of your phone. If the issue still occur then follow the troubleshooting steps listed below. Move to the next step if the problem still remains.
- Start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. Check if the problem occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then it is most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
- Wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode.
- Do a factory reset. After the reset do not install anything in your phone. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then it could be caused by a faulty display. I recommend that you bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
S5 Static Grey Screen
Problem: I have been using this phone for 1 year 6 months. I dropped my phone from probably a height of my knees. I dropped it a few times before but yesterday’s was the worst. The screen turned to a static grey screen. There was a blue light but black blank screen. Occasionally, some green lines on the screen. Still can feel the vibration. I took out the battery, sim card, memory card and held the power key for 2 minutes. My phone works after a while. Then about more than 15 hours later the same thing happens and I would have to repeat the issue. I would like to know if it is an screen problem? Do I have to repair it or it’s just a loose hardware problem? I hope I would not need to change the screen if possible as it costs about $200. Please advice. Thanks!
Solution: It’s very likely that the display is damaged or its connection to the board might be loose. In order to know what exactly is causing this issue the phone must be checked at a service center. Before bringing in your phone you should first check if the phone software is causing this issue by backing up your phone data then doing a factory reset. After the reset if the issue still occurs then this is already most likely a hardware related issue.
S5 Screen Black After Phone Dropped
Problem: I dropped my phone only a small distance (50 cm) and the screen is now black and won’t turn on. The sounds still work and I can hear notifications coming, but black screen. I’ve tried turning it off and on, leaving the battery out for 5 minutes but when I turn it on again the screen still stays black. I can feel the vibration as it turns on but nothing comes up on the screen.
Solution: Something might have come loose inside the phone or worse, the display may be damaged. Check if you are able to start the phone in recovery mode. If the display works in this mode then I recommend that you do a factory reset. Take note that this erases your phone data. If the screen is still black even in recovery mode then I recommend that you bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
S5 Flickering Yellow
Problem: My phone has been flickering a yellow color at times. Like say I set it down for a while and the screen goes dark sometimes when I hit the power button to wake it up it’ll just flash yellow. And I have to take my battery out and reset it. But this only temporarily fixes my issue.
Solution: This might just be a software related issue. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps that you need to perform for issues like this. After performing one step check if the issue still occurs, if it does then move to the next step.
- Start your phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition.
- Start the phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. If the problem doesn’t occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
If the above steps fail to fix the problem then you should have your phone checked at a service center.
S5 System UI Has Stopped Error When Taking Screenshot
Problem: When I go to take screenshots, a “System UI has stopped” message repeats five times. It didn’t do this when I updated my phone, so it doesn’t have anything to do with that. It doesn’t happen with anything else. I’ve tried restarting the phone, clearing the caches of every app – nothing I’m doing seems to be working.
Solution: Try wiping the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode. If the issue still occurs then proceed with a factory reset. Take note that you should backup your phone data before doing the reset.
S5 Screen Is Fuzzy
Problem: The screen is fuzzy. For example when a old style to loses reception and has thousands of different coloured dots flashing. But you can still receive calls and answer the call.
Solution: This appears to be caused by a damaged display. Try to start your phone in recovery mode then check if the issue still occurs. If the display works in this mode then I recommend that you do a factory reset. If the screen is still fuzzy even in recovery mode the have your phone checked at a service center. It’s very likely that the display will have to be replaced.
