Note 5 Messages App Keeps Crashing

Problem: Everytime I text something the messages app crashes saying unfortunately messages has stopped working. When the system update came out the other day I had to go back to factory settings and completely wipe my phone just to be able to text and make calls. Now the text app won’t stop crashing.

Solution: Try clearing the cache and data of the messaging app then check if the issue still occurs. If it does then you should check if a third party app installed in your phone is causing the problem by starting the device in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while those apps that you downloaded are prevented from running. If the issue does not occur when the phone is in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Note 5 No Text Notification From One Contact

Problem: I have one contact that my phone will not notify me of new text messages from them, and it also doesn’t play the notification sound for them as well. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this. It works for every single other contact but this one. It doesn’t show the number in the corner of my Messages app that came preinstalled on the phone, but the sound doesn’t play when this person texts me either. I need it fixed so they don’t feel like I am ignoring them.

Solution: You might have muted the text conversation of that particular contact.

  • Open the text message of the contact
  • Click on the down arrow beside their phone number top left
  • Change the notification setting (if the setting selector is grey then is muted)

Note 5 Cannot Change APN

Problem: I cannot change which apn the phone uses. The apn the phone will go to, everything works except most. Data works great, regular text works, calls work. Just can’t send mms. Can’t change the apn. I have the apn I need, just can’t select it.

Solution: Try backing up your phone data then do a factory reset. After the reset check if you can now change the APN setting of your phone. If it is still not possible then this might be due to the software your phone is using. Some carriers use a software that locks the changing of the APN setting of the device.

Note 5 Not Getting Notification From Contacts

Problem: I am unable to receive text notification sounds from 2 of my contacts there is a speaker icon with line through it and I am unable to get rid of it.  Please help!!!

Solution: The contacts have been muted which is why you are not getting any notifications. Do the steps listed below to fix this problem.

  • Open the text message of the contact
  • Click on the down arrow beside their phone number top left
  • Change the notification setting (if the setting selector is grey then is muted)

Note 5 Text Font Is Small After Marshmallow Update

Problem: After my install to Marshmallow, all my text messages are on the smallest font. If I change it, as soon as I open a message the font is tiny again.

Solution: It looks like this might be caused by conflicts in the phone software. Try clearing the cache and data of the messaging app then check if the issue still occurs. If it does then I recommend that you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. This reset is usually done whenever issue occur right after a software update since it effectively removes any old data that usually causes the problem.

Note 5 Spam Filter Not Found

Problem: I want to block a number from texting me. When I Google how it tells me to go to the spam filter in the message settings. I don’t see a “spam filter”. So, how can I block messages now?

Solution: Here’s how to get to block messages from certain numbers.

  • Go into your Messages app
  • Tap on “More” in the top right corner and tap on Settings
  • Select Block messages
  • Tap on Block list
  • From here you can add numbers or contacts to your Block list

If your phone does not have this setting then your carrier might have removed this feature in their phone software.
