The #Samsung #Galaxy #S5 is one of the many smartphones in the market that have been updated to Android Marshmallow. What makes this model quite impressive is that when it was first released in 2014 the device was running on Android KitKat. This shows that Samsung is committed to bring as much after sales support as they can to their devices. While getting the software update is generally good for the device there are instances when issues can occur. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 repeated update issue & other related problems.

S5 Repeated Update Issue
Problem: I’ll start off by saying – your website is great! Thanks for making such a thorough resource. My phone (T mobile update service) keeps telling me to update the software. I click on it. No error message comes through, phone restarts with updates installing. The install finishes. Then a few minutes later, it tells me to update it. Repeat. Does it again. Repeat two more times. Phone is still on Android 5.1.1 version. Update to Android 6 does not go through. No error messages. This is the one: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10398
Solution: It looks like there could be some glitch in the update process that. The best thing to do in this case is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Once the reset is complete check for the update again and let it install in your phone. If the OTA update fails then you should try to use Smart Switch to install the update.
S5 Invalid File During Software Update
Problem: Have been updating my s5 twice now, the issue have been getting is invalid file and anytime i am on my wifi the os updater start working and i keep getting the same problem invalid file
Solution: The same troubleshooting steps that applied on the previous issue we answered above also applies to this issue. You need to do a fresh installation of the update by doing a factory reset first prior to updating the phone. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the update. If the OTA update fails then you should try using Smart Switch to update your phone.
- Download and install Samsung Smart Switch to your computer
- Connect your phone using a USB cord to the USB port of your computer.
- The computer may install any required drivers for your device. This might take a few minutes.
- Open Smart Switch on your computer, and allow it to make the connection.
- If a software update is available for your device, Smart Switch will automatically prompt you to update. At any time, you can click Update.
- Click Update to begin downloading the necessary files.
- Click OK to proceed. Your device may turn off and on a few times during the update process. Once complete the device will return to the Home screen.
If you are still getting an invalid file then you should consider flashing the software update to your phone. Instructions on how to flash your phone can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.
S5 STARTUP FAILED- SECURE FAIL-MODEM
Problem: When phone is powered on the screen shows “STARTUP FAILED- SECURE FAIL-MODEM”. I have reinstalled stock rom first with Odin and then with Kies 3, still same problem. If I hold the power button for a while then the splash screen comes on and then the blue light in the top left corner. Then i keep getting popups like “Unfortunately, Chrome has stopped “
Solution: You might have installed a bad firmware file on your phone. Try downloading another firmware file ( try a Lollipop based and Marshmallow based firmware file) then flash it in your phone. If possible download the firmware file from a reputable website such as Sammobile. If you are still getting the same issue even with a different firmware file installed then this might already be a hardware related issue. I suggest you bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.
S5 Update Is Unavailable
Problem: I have a samsung galaxy s5 running android version 5.0 it used to have the 5.2 version but when I’ve heard that there’s a new version available for samsung s5 which is the marshmallow I tried to update it but it didn’t work so I had to reformat my phone and it went back to the 5.0 version and I tried to update it again but it still says that “update is unavailable” so I was hoping that you could help me update my phone, also, this phone is locked to Verizon wireless but I’m using a T-mobile sim. I tried to remove the sim and reformat the phone and check for updates but it still didn’t work.
Related Problem: Wondering about my 6.0 update I have a Verizon brand phone but it’s prepaid through straight talk haven’t received my update yet please help.
Solution: Since this is originally a Verizon phone then its software is designed to check for the updates on the Verizon server. Try using Smart Switch to check for the update. If Smart Switch can’t detect any update for your phone then I suggest you try inserting a Verizon LTE SIM on your device then check for the update again.
S5 Restarts After Recent Update
Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy s5 and it’s been acting up since my most recent update. The screen rolls now, I will turn it on and it will roll the logo and even my home screen when it’s unlocked. It also won’t stay on. If I leave it sitting it will restart when I press a power button. It’s getting annoying, please help me ASAP.
Solution: Since your phone is experiencing multiple issues I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. The reset will delete any old software data in your phone which is causing a conflict with the new software version resulting in this issue.
S5 Lag After Marshmallow Update
Problem: Fitbit downloaded 10 days ago. A few days ago immediately after a marshmallow update my screen has a yellowish tint. Then started acting slow. As if it had to think before doing what I want. I’m used to lightning fast. If I’m patient with my touch it works. Did a soft start, and a cleared caches, as you recommended. Screen still yellowish at times. Improved about 40%…. So it seems, maybe I’m adjusting. Still, laggy. I’d do a factory reset but I’m afraid I’m not backed up. Charging my laptop, which I haven’t used in a year. What do I do? Thank you.
Solution: Have you tried checking if certain apps in your phone is causing the lag? Try updating your phone apps by going to the Google Play Store then the My Apps section. You will be notified of any apps that need upgrading from here.
You should also try to start your phone in Safe Mode then check if it lags in this mode. If it doesn’t then a third party app might be causing this issue. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the above steps fail then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
