S5 Marshmallow Update Not Available

Problem: Hi — I submitted the same question minutes ago, but I did not give you much info.  I have tried a soft reset of the phone, but it did not help.  I have tried Settings –> SYSTEM –> About device –> System updates –> Check for Updates    I get this message: “No update available, please try again later.”   My wife has the very same cell phone with the same carrier (Viaero in eastern Colorado), but she has been able to update to Android 6.0.1 without a problem.  Thank you for your help!

Solution: Does the phone originally come from the Viaero carrier? If it comes from another carrier and you had it unlocked for use in Viaero then the device will most likely check for the update on the servers of its original carrier. You will then get the no update available error since the phone is not able to access the servers. If this is the case then you should insert a SIM card of its original carrier then check for the update again.

If your phone is originally a Viaero device and you are getting this error message then you should try to update the phone using a computer with the Smart Switch software installed and running. Connect your phone using a USB cord to your computer then let Smart Switch check for the update.

If no update is available then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Take note that you will not be able to get the official software update if you have rooted your phone or if your phone is running on a custom firmware.

S5 Software Not Updating

Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy S5, purchased from and previously serviced by Verizon. I’ve recently moved to Canada and my services is now through Videotron. My phone seems to work fine apart on the Videotron network, apart two problems: 1. I cannot update the OS, When I try to access the update servers, I get the error message “Software update is temporarily unavailable. Try again later.” This message has persisted for greater than a week.  The update is available via my provider as my partner has successfully updated his phone. 2. I’m able to send text messages successfully, but any messages with photos attached fail. Thanks for your assistance!

Solution: The reason why your phone software is not updating is because it is checking for the update on the Verizon servers. Since your phone is now running on a different carrier it no longer has access to these servers. Ideally, you would want to place a Verizon SIM on the phone then check for the update again. This update should become available. If you don’t have access to a working Verizon SIM then try to perform the steps listed below.

  • Connect your phone using a USB cord to a computer with Smart Switch installed and running. Try to do the update using the software.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. After the reset try to check for the update using the OTA method. You should also try to perform the first step again if the OTA method fails.

Regarding the second issue the reason why you are unable to send picture messages is because the APN setting your phone is using is still set for Verizon. Check the APN setting of your phone and make the necessary changes if needed. You can check the website of Viaero for their APN settings.

S5 Verizon Unlocked Not Updating To Marshmallow

Problem: Hello, I recently bought a Samsung S5 Verizon Unlocked 16GB. It has Android version 5.0. I tried to search for an update by the Software update option in About the Phone option. But it opens an Verizon Application, and it does not give me any update. I am using an external carrier that uses T-Mobile tower service. How should I update my phone to version 6.0? Please Help.

Solution: This is a similar issue to the one which we have tackled above. To get the Marshmallow update you will need to use an active Verizon SIM on your phone. If you can’t get this SIM then try performing the steps listed below.

  • Use Smart Switch to update your phone. Connect your phone using a USB cord with Smart Switch installed and running. Once your phone is detected you will be prompted that an update is available.
  • Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. After the reset check for the update using the OTA method. If no update is available then use Smart Switch to update your phone.

S5 Restarts After Marshmallow Update

Problem: Ever since I downloaded Marshmallow 6.0.1, when I try to turn my phone on using the home key with the built in finger scanner on, it reboots. The touch keys light up for a couple of seconds but the screen does not. The keys go off and then the restart screen appears. I have done several factory resets on the phone and not downloaded any third party apps after the reset and the issue still occurs. As well as this, sometimes the screen will not turn on at all but the touch keys will. The only way I’ve found to resolve this second issue is to take out the battery. I hope you have a solution to these issues. Thank you in advance for your help.

Solution: Since you already performed several factory resets then the issue might be caused by the update. If no further updates are available for your phone then I suggest you try connecting the phone to its charger then observe if the issue occurs while it is connected. If it doesn’t then you might want to try replacing the battery with a new one.

Another factor that can be causing this problem is the software update itself. You should consider flashing the previous software version back to your phone then check if the problem still occurs. Instructions on how to flash your phone can be found at several of the popular Android forums online.

If the above steps fail to fix the problem then this could already be a hardware issue. I suggest you bring your phone to a service center and have it checked.

S5 Warm After Marshmallow Update

Problem: I recently had to go back to my S5 Active after I managed to crack the screen of my new (had it less than a month) S7 Edge.  {Not to worry, it is being repaired by Samsung.}  My S5 began notifying me that there was an update once we put in the new SIM card.  That update loaded and installed several times.  I finally stumbled upon your site and, with a bit of worry, cleared the cache.  It installed again after clearing the cache, but this time the phone got uncomfortably warm – just like what happened when this update hit the S7 Edge – so I think it worked.

Solution: It’s quite normal for the phone to become warm after the software update since certain processes are still running and adjusting to the new software version. This should only last for a couple of minutes or an hour a the most. If your phone is warm for a long time then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
