Speaking of this model, this is what we will be discussing today. Several of our readers have sent us the issues that they have with the display of this phone. While the issues only occur in a small number of the total number of S5 models released in the market we aim to resolve these problems. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S5 display will not turn on issue & other related problems.

S5 Display Will Not Turn On
Problem: suddenly the display will not turn on after it goes to sleep. I can get it to work by clicking the power button (not turning the phone off and on). basically I am just waking the unit up so I can use it.. however the display will just blink and stay blank.. if I tap the screen I can hear that I am opening whatever should be on the screen but cannot see what it is. after playing with the power button I can get the screen to light up and the phone works great once the screen it lit. but once it goes to sleep again after not using it for a while then I have to repeat the steps to get it to come on again.
Solution: Several other owners of this device have also experienced this same problem. Most of them attribute the problem to be caused by the phone software. This is good since if it is a software problem then it can easily be resolved on your end.
The first thing you will want to do is to make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version. If your phone is still running on KitKat then I suggest you get the latest Lollipop update.
Once you have made sure that your phone is running on the latest software update the next thing to do is to wipe the cache partition of your phone from the recovery mode. This deletes the temporary data stored in your phone that could be causing this issue. Restart the phone then check if the issue still occurs.
One other factor that you should also look into is the possibility that an app you installed in your phone is causing the problem. To check if this is the case you need to start the phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. If the problem does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Finally, if the above troubleshooting steps fail then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset.
S5 Bottom Half Of Screen Is Blinking
Problem: The bottom half of the screen is blinking. It does it right before the screen turns off after using the phone. AT&T has been trying to update but the update fails. I even did a soft start and ran it in safe mode and it’s still glitchy.
Solution: Try starting your phone in recovery mode and see if the screen still blinks. If it does then this could be a hardware related problem in which case you need to bring the phone to an authorized service center and have it checked. There’s a possibility that the display will need to be replaced.
If the blinking does not occur in recovery mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. If the reset fails to resolve the problem then maybe a software update will help. If the phone does not update through the official channels then you should consider flashing the device with an updated firmware file. Instructions on how to perform this procedure can be found at several of the Android forums online.
S5 Screen Is Black
Problem: The screen is just black. The LED notifications still light up, and the screen recognizes that I’m touching it, but the screen display will not turn on. I’ve had this phone barely over a year, and has no water damage, and has not been dropped many times. I had left it on my bed for an hour (after having used it to check Facebook, etc.) then came back later and it just didn’t work at all. I tried doing recovery mode but can’t see if that works either. Extremely frustrating.
Solution: Try taking out the phone battery and microSD card ( if you have one installed) then press and hold the power button for at least a minute. This will discharge the phone circuit and clear its RAM. If the problem is caused by some form of corrupt temporary data then this procedure should do the trick. Reinsert just the battery then turn on your phone. If it is still a black screen then verify again if you are able to access the recovery mode. If you are able to access this mode then I suggest you do a factory reset. Take note that your phone data will be completely deleted so make sure you have a backup copy. If you are unable to access the recovery mode then this could already be a hardware related problem. Have your phone checked at an authorized service center.
S5 Display Turn On And Off When Charging
Problem: When charging of the phone is complete the screen turns on for about 10 to 15 seconds and then off for approximately the same period of time. This behavior repeats until I unplug the charger and has been occurring since I purchased the phone. Clearly, I want to turn it off. I am using the factory provided charger and cable, Smart Stay is off, Daydream is off, Stay awake is unchecked, and Charging LED being on or off has no effect. FYI. The Android Version on my phone is 5.0 (Lollipop and API level are not specified).
Solution: What you should do first in this case is to check if the problem has anything to do with the charger and its related components. Try using a different charger and charging cord when charging the device. You should also clean the charging port of your phone using a can of compressed air or cotton bud dipped in alcohol. If the issue still occurs after this then it’s time to check the phone software. Sometimes an app that is aggressively running in the background can cause this issue. To check if this is the case you need to start your phone in Safe Mode. If the problem does not occur in this mode then it’s most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
One last software troubleshooting that you can do is to backup your phone data and do a factory reset. After the reset do not install anything in your phone but instead check first if the issue still occurs.
S5 Bottom Half Of Screen Flickers
Problem: Everytime I press the power button, the bottom half of my screen flickers green for some odd reasons. It has been happening for a couple weeks now and I’ve been trying to ignore it but it is bothering, it happens when I turn on screen at times as well. Any ideas on how to fix it ? I went to a local, who repairs phones and computers and he said it’ll be nearly 200 dollars to fix, and with that money I can go buy another phone but Samsung is my favorite cell phone company so I’m hoping this would eventually go away
Solution: You can try to check if the problem is software related by backing up your phone data and doing a factory reset. Once the reset is complete immediately check if the issue still occurs.If it does then the problem could be caused by a faulty display. If this is the case then you can either have the display replaced or just get a new phone.
S5 Screen Not Responsive
Problem: Hi there, my Samsung s5 screen is not responsive. When I turn it on the screen shows lots of coloured pixels and can hear it booting up but then the screen goes blank and it becomes non responsive. Have tried to taking the battery out, hold power button down for a couple of minutes but same problem. Have also tried to reboot by holding all three button which has now left the on with coloured pixels. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Solution: Same as the issue which we tacked above, the first thing that you need to do is to perform a factory reset from the recovery mode. Take note that this will delete your phone data. If you are unable to access the recovery mode then the problem could be caused by a defective display. Have this checked at an authorized service center.
