One of the things which we hate to happen to our smartphones is when it freezes. When this happens you are unable to do anything with the device. You will either have to wait until the problem goes away or press the power button to turn the phone off then turn it back on again. For phone’s that have a removable battery then taking out the battery and inserting it back into the device is a quicker option. The #Samsung Galaxy #S4 is not immune to this problem as several of our readers have been sending us their experiences with the phone freezing. This is why in this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S4 freezes without warning issue & other related problems.

S4 Freezes Without Warning
Problem: My phone freezes without warning and the only way I can reboot it is by removing the battery. I did a factory reset which helped for awhile but the problem has returned. I don’t know if updating to 5.0 lollipop would help. I bought the s4 new and unlocked and have it sim carded to Straight talk. Can you advise me. Thanks.
Solution: Updating the phone software to Lollipop will definitely be an advantage and could prevent this freezing issue as the apps that you have installed in your phone may not work well with KitKat anymore. You should definitely make the software update a priority.
Before doing a software update try to check what other factors are causing this problem. The first thing to consider is the amount of RAM you have left. If there are a lot of apps running in the background then the phone will tend to freeze. Try to quit some of the running apps. If possible you should uninstall some of the apps that you don’t really use. To further check if an app is causing the problem you should start the phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. Check if the issue occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then an app is the most likely culprit. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
There are also instances when corrupt data in your phone can cause it to freeze. To check if this is the case you should start your phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition.
If your phone has a microSD card installed then you should try taking it out. If this card has some corrupt sectors then it will take a long time for the phone to read the data stored in it causing the device to freeze.
One troubleshooting step you should also consider is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this as it will delete all data stored in your device.
S4 Freezes After The Lollipop Update
Problem: After the lollipop update my phone freezes for a second or two and returns to home screen with default wallpaper set to solid blue. Another issue when i am at google browser and open a page it freezes and and returns to previous page i was it..or sometimes same as above crashes to home screen.Another issue my keyboard disappears for couple of seconds while typing.
Solution: If you are experiencing issues on your device after updating the phone software then this is most likely caused by the data of the old software version that has not been completely removed from the phone. This data ideally should have been deleted during the update but there are instances when it remains in the device. This will then cause a conflict with the new software version resulting in various issues. To address this problem all you need to do is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Browser Freezes Then Crashes
Problem: When following external link whether from gmail, twitter, facebook, after a minute or less the screen freezes then a window pops up stating “TAB CRASHED, RESTART”. A restart takes me back to the web page, and within a minute it does the same thing. I uninstalled all apps downloaded over past 6 months, did soft boot, cleared cache, nothing helps. Seems to be a browser problem but I don’t know what browser samsung uses or whether another browser would fix the problem. Thanks
Solution: Try starting the phone in Safe Mode then check if the issue still occurs in this mode. If it doesn’t then a third party app installed in your phone could be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it. If the problem remains even in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. Another option is to use a different browser, such as Google Chrome, and make this the default browser to open external links.
S4 Videos Freeze In Facebook Messenger
Problem: Whenever I try to play videos in Facebook Messenger they play for about 5 seconds and then freeze. I have cleared all caches, done all phone and app updates, checked connection speed, reinstall the app, soft reset, factory hard reset nothing helps. All other apps work fine and the same video on my other S4 with jellybean works fine as well.
Solution: One other possible factor that can cause this problem is the phone software. Try to check if there are any new updates available and apply them to your device.
S4 Freezes When Running An App
Problem: Whenever I run the app and get into certain levels the app will freeze and then kick me out and other times it will freeze and just automatically turn my phone off. Please help with this issue.
Solution: The problem could be caused by the app itself. Try clearing the cache and data of the concerned app. If the issue still occurs then I suggest you start your phone in recovery mode and wipe its cache partition. If this doesn’t resolve the issue then uninstall the app. Install a fresh version from the Google Play Store.
S4 Freezes On Its Own
Problem: The phone freezes by itself. There time that it says unfortunately the ui system is not working. And videos and audios don’t play. And the camera doesn’t work. There apps that don’t work at all. Like YouTube and snapchat
Solution: This issue is most likely caused by some form of corrupt data in your phone. Try starting the device in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition. Reboot your phone then check if the issue still occurs. If it does then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Freezes When Making A Call
Problem: This just started about a week ago. When I try to make a phone call it can hear the connection tone, but no dial tone or anything. I can see where they answer the call, but they can’t hear me and I can’t hear them. Also it freezes when i try to make make a call or try to answer one. I have had the whole phone lockup and the screen turns black. No soft or hard keys will work. I have done a master reset on my phone, checked the “ok google” and “Google now” settings. I’ve had the phone about a year now. Please help me. Please…
Solution: Since you already performed a factory reset which didn’t resolve the problem then this could already be a hardware related issue. For a hardware concern I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
