Even today’s high-end devices are not free of wireless connectivity issues. As a matter of fact, online forums and websites are flooded with posts from a number of smartphone users reporting various issues tied to the Wi-Fi feature of their respective devices, including those who own the Samsung #Galaxy Note 5. One of these reported issues is about the #Note5 that has no data when connected to a wireless (Wi-Fi) network. And this is what we tackle in this post.
After digging through some relevant sources, we have managed to come up with this comprehensive piece, containing a few helpful tips on what to do if your Galaxy Note 5 device can connect to a Wi-Fi network but unable to get through the Internet or there’s no data received. For example, your phone is connected to the Wi-Fi but you cannot browse any website and/or sync online accounts.
The following methods are deemed as general workarounds used by many device owners to deal with no data issues on their respective devices, including the Note 5 variant. You too can try any of these methods, if necessary.
- Check the Signal Strength and ensure your phone is getting enough strength to acquire a good signal. Remember, the more bars you see, the better the signal your phone can get. If you see only two bars of signal strength or fewer, try to move your device closer to the wireless router.
- Eliminate potential interference. Some home appliances such as microwave ovens and cordless phones can cause interference between your phone and wireless networks that might be in range. If you see any of these devices near your phone, try to turn them off temporarily or move them farther away and see if it’ll fixed the problem. Or if you’ve got the guts, you can change the router or access point settings to use a different wireless network instead. You can also set the network channel to be selected automatically if it’s set to a fixed network number as some channels work better than the other.

- Double-check Physical Connections/Wirings (if applicable). In case you are using Ethernet cables, DSL/cable connections, and the like, then it’s likely that the network (internet connection) problem is due to a loose physical connection.
In this regard, double-check all the connections from and to your router, and/or high-speed modem (if available). Make sure all cable connections are properly secured.
- Power-cycle your wireless router or high-speed modem. The process is the same as turning the device off for a few minutes, and then turning it back on. The method is referred to as soft reset, on smartphones. Performing this method will restart and refresh your router/modem, allowing it to re-establish network connections. In case you need help in the process, here’s how to power cycle a wireless router or high-speed modem:
- Locate the power switch on your router or modem. If a power switch isn’t accessible, then just disconnect the power cord from the back.
- Wait for 1-2 minutes and then turn the router/modem back on. Otherwise, simply reconnect the power cord, if you disconnected it from the back of the router and/or modem.
- After the router and/or modem reboot, try to connect your phone to your wireless network and see if it’s already able to receive data.
- Isolate the problem. To determine if the problem is with the router/modem, try to connect with another wireless device. If neither device has no data or can’t connect to the Internet, then it implies that the problem is most likely with the router or modem. In this case, please contact your Internet Service Provider for further assistance and recommendations.
There are also some instances when a wireless router is configured to allow a limited number of simultaneous connections. In order to prevent any unwanted connection, MAC filters are entrenched into some networks.

What is MAC Filtering and how does it affect your phone’s Wi-Fi feature?
MAC filtering is a security method implemented on some networks for added protection against infiltrators. It works by filtering MAC addresses of each device, and grants network access to only those devices that have been included in the access list. Each device with wireless transmitter possesses a unique identifier referred to as MAC address. To eliminate this factor from the potential culprits, please contact the device manufacturer or your Internet Service Provider and have them add your phone to the MAC filtering list (if necessary).
You can locate the MAC address on your device by navigating to this menu: Apps->Settings->About device->Status->Wi-Fi MAC address.
- Verify wireless configurations by navigating to your phone’s Wi-Fi settings menu.
Here’s how: Tap Apps->Settings->Wi-Fi, and then toggle the switch to disable Wi-Fi for a moment. Afterwards, toggle the switch to turn it back on. Once Wi-Fi is re-enabled, open a browser on your phone and try to navigate to a website. See if it goes through this time, else, try another workaround.
- Forget Network and Reconnect. If the problem occurs while using a previously connected wireless network or known Wi-Fi network on your device, try to disconnect from that network and then connect again. Here’s how it works:
- Tap Apps from Home.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Wi-Fi to get to your phone’s Wi-Fi menu.
- Touch and hold the name of the network you’re currently connected to, and then tap the option to Forget
- Wait for a few moments and then tap the network name again.
- If you see a secured network icon (lock), you need to enter the correct password to gain access to that network. To ensure you’re typing in the correct password, tap the option to Show password. Each character displays as you type.
- Finally, tap Connect to connect to that network again.
- Update to the latest Software Version available. Another common recommendation is to update your device to the latest software version available.
To check for available updates on your phone, navigate to Apps->Settings->System->About device->Software update->Check for updates->OK. If a system update is available, simply follow the onscreen instructions to download and complete the update installation.
Note: To avoid potential data loss during the software update process, we strongly suggest you back up all your important data before you start. Bear in mind that once the update has been completed, you won’t be able to downgrade the software.
- Check for Network outages. One more thing you need to consider, that might as well affect your Internet connection is a network outage. If all of a sudden, your devices are unable to connect to the Internet or can connect but no data, then there might be a network service outage. Contact your Internet provider and have them check for any possible outages that might be affecting network services in your place.
