With the use of smartphones, such as the #Samsung Galaxy #S4, you can connect to the Internet while on the move. This can be done either through a Wi-Fi connection or a mobile data connection.
There are however instances when connecting to the Internet using a mobile device can become quite a problem. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S4 Internet won’t work issue & other related problems.

S4 Internet Won’t Work
Problem: I recently installed my metro pcs sim card into a galaxy sch-i545 android version 4.4.2 and my internet won’t work. I am able to text and calling works though. How do i fix it. Phone is rooted as well.
Solution: Was your phone using a SIM card from a different service provider before you installed the MetroPCS sim card? If this is the case then you need to change the APN settings of your phone to the setting that MetroPCS is using.
To access your phone APN settings go to Settings>More>Mobile networks>Access Point Names>Menu>. Create a new APN then enter the settings listed below.
- Name: MetroPCS
- APN: fast.metropcs.com
- Proxy: Not Required
- Port: Not Required
- Username: Not Required
- Password: Not Required
- Server: Not Required
- MMSC: https:// metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc
- MMS proxy: leave it blank
- MMS port: leave it blank
- MCC: 310
- MNC: 16
- Authentication type: Not Required or just use the default value shown
S4 Smart Network Switch Turned Off
Problem: i have not been connected to a data plan for about a year and use my phone to surf the net. you know, facebook and such. as of yesterday my phone says that “smart network switch” has been turned off because mobile data is off. I cannot find a way to turn it back on, can you help??
Solution: The smart network switch allows you to experience a stable Internet connection by automatically switching to mobile data whenever the Wi-Fi connection is not good. You can access this by going to Setting – Connections – Wi-Fi ( make sure it is on to access the advanced settings).Press the menu key to access the Smart network switch setting. Try to toggle this switch and check which setting makes the problem disappear. Since you don’t have a mobile data subscription then I think the best setting for this is to turn it off.
It’s also best to take note that your phone should be connected to a stable Wi-Fi connection so that you will be able to access your favorite online sites.
One other factor that can cause this problem is corrupt temporary data. If this is the case then I suggest you access the recovery mode of your phone then wipe its cache partition.
If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the problem then proceed with backing up your phone data and do a factory reset.
S4 Mobile Internet Not Available Error
Problem: I keep getting message in a white box ….saying mobile internet not available until you remove SIM card and restart …I have done this several times with no. Luck
Solution: Try checking if this problem occurs in only one location or if it occurs in other locations as well. If it is only in one location then the problem could be network related. If this is the case then you should contact your service provider regarding this problem. You should also have your service provider check on the status of your account to check if an account related problem is causing this issue.
A SIM card that is not properly inserted into the phone can also cause this problem. Make sure that the card is properly inserted and is secured in the SIM slot.
There’s also the possibility that the SIM card your phone is using could have a problem. Try taking out the SIM and insert it in another phone. You can also try to insert another SIM into your phone. If the SIM card is causing the problem then you should have this replaced.
One last troubleshooting step that you can do if the above troubleshooting steps fail is to backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Mobile Data Not Working After Upgrade
Problem: I upgraded my phone but now internet works only when am using wifi yet i want to use mobile data. Pliz help
Solution: It’s most likely that the upgrade could have changed the phone APN settings. I suggest you check on these settings and make sure that it matches the settings that your carrier is using.
S4 Wi-Fi Not Connecting Automatically
Problem: My problem is with my wifi, my phone doesn’t connect automatically, sometimes it does and some not. So I have to enter the password every time i want to connect to my wifi. The auto connection setting is checked. I have reset it and works for 1 or 2 weeks. My phone is a galaxy s4 active sgh-i537. Please help me.
Solution: There’s a possibility that the problem is caused by a third party app installed in your phone. To check if this is the case you need to start your phone in Safe Mode. Check if your phone can connect to a Wi-Fi connection in this mode. If it can then the problem could be caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Another possible factor that can cause this problem is corrupt temporary data that is in your phone. To check if this is the case you need to start your phone in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition.
S4 Connection Not In Range
Problem: Happy New year! I hope yours started better off than mine. I am currently at a friends place, having bought a 2nd handed s4 just earlier today. When I was sitting next to the router, both my s2 and s4 had good wifi connection. But now that I have moved a floor up…. s2 shows 2 bars for wifi, s4 says connection not in range.So it’s not router issue. I have tried to apply the *#0011# fix, but that did nothing. If you can, please help.
Solution: You need to check if the problem is caused by the phone software by backing up your phone data and doing a factory reset. After the reset check if the phone is getting a Wi-Fi signal. If no connection is in range then this may already be a hardware related issue possibly caused by the phone antenna. I suggest you bring the phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
S4 Not Automatically Switching To 4G
Problem: I have been getting the “E” with arrows going up and down on my notification bar it usually has the 4G and signal bar. I normally get this when I’m in wooded areas but then it goes back to normal. Today however, it’s doing it when I’m in my apartment where it usually always gets 4G signal. It’s slowing down my internet. How can I fix this?
Solution: You should first check the network mode your phone is using. Make sure that it is set to LTE/GSM/WCDMA (auto connect). If it is then the phone should immediately switch to the LTE mode whenever an LTE signal is present. If it doesn’t then there’s a possibility that this problem could be caused by some form of corrupt data in your phone. You will then need to start the device in recovery mode and wipe the cache partition of your phone. If this doesn’t resolve the problem then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Wi-Fi Disconnects When Bluetooth Is On
Problem: Everytime I turn on my Bluetooth and connect my headphones my WiFi disconnects and every time reconnect it it disconnects after a few minutes
Solution: This could be caused by a bug in the phone software. Try to update your phone software then check if the problem still occurs. If it does then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
If after the reset you are still experiencing the same issue then this could already be a hardware related problem. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.
