Samsung Galaxy S5 Does Not Update

Software updates are regularly pushed to Android devices either by Google, the phone manufacturer, or the carriers. The #Samsung Galaxy #S5 for example which was initially released running on Android KitKat has now been updated to Android Lollipop. There are however a couple of owners of this device who have yet to update their phone due to some issues. This is what we will tackle in today’s post.

S5 Downloads But Does Not Install Update

Problem: I am able to download the latest update. However, when I go to restart my phone to begin the installation,  when the screen goes black and the blue circle is “working “, I see a message in the upper left corner of the screen that says ‘recovery booting ‘, then after the phone finishes restarting,  I get a message saying that the installation  was interrupted,  and that the installation failed.  I have tried this 3 times now. I have over 3 gb of memory  available,  and my phone was fully charged upon restarting.  I’m very frustrated with rhis. I’ve never had any trouble updating my phone(s) in the past. Please help!

Solution: What’s happening here is that the software update successfully downloads to your device but then it fails to install. There are several factors to consider that may be causing this problem. First lets start with the storage space issue. The update you downloaded is usually in its compressed state which means that it has to be uncompressed first before it can be applied to your phone. Since your phone has over 3 GB of storage left ( internal storage ) then this normally is enough. Some of our readers however have reported that they were only able to apply the update after freeing up 6 GB of internal storage space. You should consider freeing up more storage space and see if this resolves the problem.

Another factor to consider is that some glitch in your phone software is preventing your phone from being updated. If this is the case then you will need to backup your phone data and do a factory reset. After the reset you will need to download the update again. Make sure to have a stable Wi-Fi connection when downloading the update.

As an alternative, you can also use Kies or Smart Switch to update your phone software.

S5 AT&T Update Fails To Install

Problem: I can download the new update for lollypop 5.1.1 but when it goes to restart and update, the AT&T logo appears infront of a black background. Gets to 1% then says that the update has failed. This is the 2nd time it’s happened.

Related Problem: Trying to upgrade to 5.1.1,  downloads the updateupdate,  reboots to recovery,  installs 1‰, states update failed,  restarts with message from update,  update failed. I’ve got 3.5 gig of space free.  Unfortunately don’t know why it’s not updating. I’ve seen others posting on ATT website they are having issues as well.  Thanks for any help.

Related Problem: I have a Samsung s5 active on AT&T network. It has android version 5.0 on it. I recently got a update it to update to 5.1.1. This is the 3rd time now. I can download the entire update and when the phone restarts to apply the update it gets anywhere from 0-2% than fails. I haven’t installed any apps since I got the notification for the update. I even started removing apps. I have 4.03 gb free. Nothing is working.

Related Problem: System has an update available but it goes through process of updating then after it restarts it says update failed, I’ve tried restarting device tried completing it on safe mode, took it to best buy and they added same version still wouldn’t update. Samsung couldn’t help, so please help. It does say updated interupted

Related Problem: Hello, So my phone has been trying to do an update the past couple of days and it’s not working.. I’ve done a soft reset and still nothing.. everything goes fine up to the point when it needs to reset. when it gets to the logo screen it says in small blue print ‘booting’ then after a second under where the carrier logo is it says ‘installation failed’ then after the phone turns back on I get a message saying the installation was interrupted.. model number is G900A if that helps.. contact me if you need further info.. thanks a bunch!

Solution: Several owners of this device under the AT&T network have been experiencing this type of issue. The first thing you need to do is to make sure that your phone has sufficient internal storage space available. While Samsung and AT&T recommends that your phone has at least 3 GB of internal storage space available some of our readers say that at least 6 GB of internal storage space is needed to successfully install the update.

If your phone already has sufficient storage space and the issue still occurs then the next thing to do is to check if some form of corrupt data in your phone is preventing the update from being installed. You will need to wipe the cache partition of your phone from recovery mode first then check if the issue still occurs.

If the problem persists then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. After the reset make sure your phone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network then download the update.

You can also do the update by connecting the phone using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch installed. Just follow the onscreen instructions to do the update.

S5 Update Can’t Be Found

Problem: When I attempt to update my device , it says that an update cannot be found. But my dad’s phone(same phone) gets the newest updates no problem.

Solution: Some of the reasons why your phone can’t get any update is if it has been rooted or if it is running on a custom software. If you phone is unlocked and is using a SIM from another network then it’s also possible that you will not be getting the update.

If your phone software has not been modified in any way and you still can’t get any updates OTA then try connecting your phone using a USB cord to a computer with Kies or Smart Switch installed. You can use this software to update your phone.

If an update is still not available then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset. After the reset has completed check if you can now update your phone.

  1. I have,an unlocked s5 active. I got the lollipop 5.1.1 OTA update no problem. But just the other day it started 2 update then said there’s software not recognized by AT&T the word kernel was in the top left corner of my screen then I was locked out! It said turn off & bring to att store. I did. They said it was bricked!! Luckily a nicer salesman helped me and got it working again. But said Don’t accept the update!! WHAT? I’VE BEEN WAITING 4 THIS MARSHMALLOW UPDATE SINCE DEVELOPMENT!! And now suddenly on my start screen it says custom with an unlocked lock symbol. This is news 2 me! I’ve had the phone 4 over a year! I just want 2 do whatever I need 2 to get marshmallow! ! I just don’t know how. Plz help me!! Thanks.

  2. The ATT update doesn’t work on most ATT user’s devices. I free’d up over 6 GB to install the 5.1 update and still fails exactly like it did when I only had 2, 4 and 5 GB. Yeah, I don’t want to factory reset. This is a HUGE problem with no solution.
