Sometimes one of the simplest features of a smartphone can be frustrating to use. Take for instance the #Samsung Galaxy #S4 and its text message sending capability. Normally, this is easy to do since all that needs to be done is to open the messaging app, type in a message, select a contact you want to send it to then hit on the send button. This is not the case for some of our readers though as they are experiencing the Galaxy S4 does not send text message issue.
In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle this problem and hopefully provide some insights on how to deal with this issue and resolve it.

S4 Cannot Send Text Message
Problem: My issues is I can’t send texts, I don’t know if I can’t revive any but I know I was able to send and receive texts the other day, i have service so I restarted my phone, I removed my Sim card, and I even changed the number in the message center, still no luck.
Solution: Can your phone make a phone call? This is to verify that you indeed have a signal. If you can make a call then the first thing to do is to make sure that you have the correct message center number. For AT&T this is +13123149810 (with the plus sign). Once you have made sure this number is correct try to verify first if you have an active text messaging service. You may need to contact your service provider to verify this information. You should also inquire if there are any network related issues in your area that affects the text messaging service.
Once you have made sure that you have an active text messaging service you will want to clear the cache and data of the text messaging app. This is to check if a corrupt data within the app is causing the problem. You should also try to use an alternate messaging app such as Hangouts and see if you can send a text message with it.
Another factor to consider is that an app you downloaded is preventing you from sending a text message. To check if this is the case just start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. Try to send a text message in this mode. If your message sends out then the problem may be caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If the issue persists even in Safe Mode then boot your device in recovery mode and wipe the cache partition of your phone. Now start your phone normally and try sending a text message.
If you still can’t send a text message then I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset.
S4 Not Sending Or Receiving Text Message
Problem: I woke up this morning and my phone had the wrong date and time. I fixed this. However it will not let me text others or receive texts except for one group message from relatives. Nothing else can can be texted to me. What’s wrong???? I do NOT want to have to go into Verizon tomorrow!!!! It is Black Friday! I’ll be there all day. I have rebooted several times and have taken the battery out too. Nothing works. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Solution: There are several factors to consider that may be causing this problem. Since you mentioned that the date and time of your phone changed prior to this problem occurring then it is very likely a software related problem. Try wiping the cache partition of your phone first then send yourself a text message. If you can receive the text message then the problem may be caused by some form of corrupt data.
If the problem continues then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset. This is necessary since we don’t know the reason why the time and date of your phone changed. This may be connected to the problem of your phone not able to send or receive a text message. A factory reset restores your phone to its original condition. See if the issue still occurs after the reset.
S4 Can’t Send Text Message
Problem: I can receive texts, but I cannot sent them out UNLESS I am replying to an mms. Also, if I’m on a phone call, I cannot use the numeric keypad. The keypad works any other though. Also, I am a family mobile (tmobile network) user and this phone is a verizon unlock. Please help!
Solution: The reason why you can’t send a text message is that your phone is most likely still using the Verizon message center number. You need to change this number to the T-Mobile message center number which is +12063130004.
To do this
- Go to Settings
- Press Messaging.
- Press the Menu key.
- Press Settings.
- Press Message Centre.
You should also try using the different network modes of your phone then see which one allows you to send a text message
- Tap Settings.
- Tap More networks.
- Tap Mobile networks.
- Tap Network mode.
In most cases where a Verizon S4 is unlocked to work on the T-Mobile network there is no way for you to change the message center number. If this is the case then you should consider reflashing your phone with a firmware that allows for the setting of the message center number.
Regarding the issue you are having with the keypad when on a call this could be caused by a software glitch where your phone is stuck in car mode. Try the following steps listed below to resolve the problem.
- Go to your drop down tool box menu
- Select car mode to turn it on
- Exit out of car mode
- Return to the drop down tool box menu to turn off the car mode.
If that does not solve the problem then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Not Sending Text Message To Multiple Recipients
Problem: Hi, I am trying to send a text message (nothing flash, just text) to multiple recipients, but it keeps failing. What do I do? I am afraid to keep resending, at the risk of annoying people, but I have spoken with one recipient who has def not received it! Thank you in advance.
Solution: Try sending yourself a text message then check if you can receive it. If you can then I think I know the reason why you are having this problem. When you try to send a text message to multiple recipients your phone may be converting this to a group message which requires is sent via a data connection. You need to have an active mobile data subscription for this and you need to turn on your mobile data. Another requirement is that your phone should be using the correct APN settings used by your network.
S4 Not Sending Text Message
Problem: Recently purchased used unlocked Verizon Galaxy S4 phone, put Cricket Wireless SIM in it (they use AT&T lines), and I am having trouble with texting. Incoming texts are fine, but I can’t send texts out. I get an error message. This happens when I’m on 4G. Any suggestions? Is it an APN issue? Cricket can’t figure it out.
Solution: The most likely cause of this issue is that the message center number of your phone is still set to the one used by Verizon. Make sure this number is set to the one Cricket Wireless is using. There are however instances when the option to change the message center number is not available. If this is the case then you will either have to send a text message when not using LTE (change the network mode of your phone) or you should consider flashing your phone with a firmware that allows the message center number to be changed.
