I was experiencing the same problem of my phone just turned off randomly by itself. I figured out the battery wasn’t snuggly fit into the terminals inside of the phone, so I put a little piece of folded paper at the bottom that kind of jam the battery up into the contacts and it started to work fine after that. Just a little tip not sure if that’ll work for everybody but it worked for me and saved hours of headache and frustration. — Bill

Hello there. I have a Note 4 which is constantly in a reboot loop unless the charger is plugged in then it’s fine. but it gets very hot quickly too. I have tried a master reset but didn’t work but haven’t tried a reboot without having everything backed up.
is this worth a go or could it be battery related as it drains quicker than it did before also…if I turn my device on without the charger it won’t even get to the home screen before it starts to boot loop. Thanks. — Nick
Solution: Hi Nick. The problem is most probably due to a faulty battery. Based on your description, it looks like the battery can no longer hold a charge, causing the phone to lose power when it’s not connected to a charger. Your best thing to do is to try using another battery.
My battery was drained and I tried to recharge but it won’t accept the charger that i used. Then changed back to my original charger. Same problem.
When powered off it would charge but the battery icon would show empty and the empty battery sign would be going off and coming on periodically. It would only charge when off on the wall charger. Have done soft reset and cleared cache, still same problem.
The only thing that i have not done is getting a new battery. It does not show level of charge but would show level of discharge and it drains so fast. If i plug my charger when on, it won’t charge. So the only way for now is to turn if off and charge. what can i do ? — Jones
Solution: Hi Jones. We think that the problem may not be the battery. Buying a new battery will not fix the issue if the real reason behind is the phone itself. It’s not unheard of for some phones, especially those infected by malware, to discharge power faster than a charger can charge the battery.
Try to charge the phone while it’s off then do the standard software troubleshooting first to see if our guess is correct. The most efficient method to do in this case though is to simply do a factory reset. If you haven’t done this procedure before, just follow these steps:
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Launch Settings and scroll to ‘User and Backup’ section.
- Tap Backup and reset.
- If you want, you can tick the checkboxes next to Automatic restore and Back up my data.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Touch Reset device.
- You may be asked to enter your PIN or Password.
- Tap Continue and then Delete all.
Remember, doing a factory reset will erase everything off the phone’s internal storage device. Make sure to backup your personal data (photos, videos, contacts, etc.) before proceeding.
Once you’ve done the reset, try to charge the phone again. Do not install any apps yet. Simply observe how the phone charges to see any difference. If the same thing happens even without the apps, consider getting a new battery.
I can’t find the system section tab to get the version bc I have a vision problem, but maybe you can help me anyway.
I’m having freezing all of a sudden, the keyboard will stop working & pop off & I have to wait a min or so to get it back up. Also, I have overheating issues too.
The question I need to know is if I do the reset like you have in other post, will I lose my texts? I have a text needed for a legal issue. I was going to get a Note 5 but my attorney ask me not to because I’ll lose my text. Is there anything I can do so I won’t lose my text & solve the problem?
I’m always cleaning up apps that’s draining the battery. If I’m in po power saving mode I don’t have to charge my phone for quite awhile. If I’m not in power saving mode I’m having to charge my phone 4 or 5 times a day. Use third party apps to save SMS
If you don’t have a computer, you can instead save your data to the cloud. One good example is by using Google’s free cloud service.

I ordered this phone a week ago. love the phone. but the battery drains extremely fast. if i charge it all night sometimes its 100% and then 10 minutes after it’s unplugged it will be at 90% with out even being on it. Wi-Fi is off, Bluetooth off.
I looked into some of the forums and found that they have the cell standby set wrong from factory but couldn’t figure out if that was with my phone or not. Also, when I try to check if phone is up to date it wont let me click it. it doesn’t open or anything.
I’ve tried factory reset and hard wipe but no difference.
this is a refurbished phone. also bought different battery for phone drains just as quick. with full charge phone maybe lasts 6 hrs. HELP. — Dillon
Solution: Hi Dillon. If you’ve tried a different battery already, the issue may be the phone like what Jones above has. Please follow our suggestion for Jones to verify if something’s wrong with the phone.
An issue like this is often caused by having too many apps running in the background that the phone discharges faster than the charger can manage to store something in the battery.
For the past two weeks my phone has been getting more and more difficult to keep charged. The initial symptom was slow charging/ finickiness with chargers. This showed on higher amperage chargers that normally worked quickly. Eventually, the phone would charge barely if at all on the best of chargers and slowly lose charge on the others. I also noticed an increasing frequency of connect/ disconnect notifications when plugged into my laptop via USB as well as frequent failure to mount as detachable storage. This left me in a cycle of powering down the device to charge slowly as I slept and scrounging for battery life as I was awake. — Shrikant
Solution: Hi Shrikant. The problem may have something to do with your phone’s USB port. This is the hardware component that usually fails faster than the rest because it is the point of contact. It is the part that is most susceptible to wear and tear, especially if you are not careful when you plug in the charger tip to it.
A faulty micro USB port can leak battery power if left unchecked so make sure that you have it examined by a technician for a possible repair.
If you want to do software troubleshooting first though, try booting the phone in safe mode, and/or do a factory reset just like what we tell Jones above.
Using another battery may also apply though we doubt that you have an issue there.
To boot in safe mode, just follow these steps:
- Turn off the phone completely.
- Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
- When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Vol Down key until the phone finished restarting.
- Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.
