Sony to bring Android 5.1 for the Xperia Z series starting August

Android 5.1 Lollipop

Australian carrier Telstra has revealed that 2013 Sony flagships like the Xperia Z, Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z1 Compact will receive the Android 5.1 update starting this August. This could mean that the manufacturer could begin rollout of the update much sooner as carrier variants are usually the last to receive the update.

The Android 5.1 update for these devices will introduce a bunch of changes that we saw on stock Android devices but nothing out of the ordinary apart from that. Sony has usually been pretty slow with regards to update rollouts, so it’s good to see that the company is doing whatever it can to change that image.

Android 5.1 brings features like Device Protection, improved handling of the system volume and some under the hood tweaks. It’s not known if Sony will bundle some of its own features with the update.

Most Sony devices are yet to receive Android 5.0, so this will be no less than a challenge for the Japanese manufacturer. Do you own either of the aforementioned Sony devices?
