According to a new report, Korean manufacturer LG is responsible for a majority of the smartwatch panels that are available in the market today. It is said that LG accounts for nearly 90% of all the smartwatch panels that are available today.
The company held onto 66.8% of the shipments marketshare in the first quarter of 2015 with over 8 million units said to have been shipped to the assembly line. This number has increased dramatically since the previous quarters where the company only shipped 1.1 million units.
This sudden surge in shipments is clearly due to the launch of the Apple Watch which is seeing quite a lot of demand in the global and American markets. Samsung Display is in second place to LG which is no surprise given that the company powers its own range of Gear wearables which have been around for nearly two years now.
LG has three wearables in the market today which might have been a factor in this figure mentioned above. It will be interesting to see if this growth will be consistent or if LG will lose marketshare to the likes of Samsung over the coming months. Given that Samsung is expected to make displays for the next gen Apple Watch, this is a strong possibility.
