Sony reportedly skipping RAW camera settings with its Lollipop updates

Xperia Z3

The Sony Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact started receiving the Android 5.0 update earlier today. And just as users started seeing the update on their smartphones, they have found that it is missing the RAW image capture support that was introduced by Google with Android 5.0.

Capturing images in RAW or .dng format allows for pure uncompressed photos, letting you modify it using professional photo editing tools. The reason for the exclusion of this feature is not known at this point, but it is likely that Sony has used quite a bit of its own custom camera tricks to compensate for this.

This will certainly come as a disappointment to users of the Xperia Z3 and the Xperia Z3 Compact which have decent camera sensors on them. It is hoped that Sony will resolve this with the upcoming Xperia Z4 flagship, which is expected to feature an all new camera sensor.

For those really wanting to use the RAW image capture feature on your handset, there are always apps on the Play Store which enable support for RAW image capture. But it’s always better for something like this to be enabled by default from the manufacturer’s end.

What do you think about Sony’s exclusion?
