Pebble announced the Pebble Time and the Pebble Time Steel a few weeks ago through a Kickstarter listing. The smartwatch surpassed its initial goal of $500,000 long ago and has now breached the $20 million mark. In fact, the initial goal was surpassed within 20 minutes of the listing going live. This is incredible for a crowd funded project, but not overly surprising given that Pebble has been around for a bit now and people are synonymous with the product as well.
Some have criticized Pebble’s decision to take the crowd funding route when it can fully function on its own. However, this is a safer bet for the company as it will allow them to produce the devices in the required quantities, rather than overproducing the smartwatches and piling them on in the warehouses.
This continued demand of the Pebble Time has made it the most successful Kickstarter project ever. The standard version of Pebble Time arrives in May, while the Pebble Time Steel model will not reach the customers’ hands until July.
