Customers of the Verizon Droid Turbo have been a little disappointed that the smartphone is still stuck on Android 4.4 KitKat, while other Motorola devices have already received the Lollipop update. A new report now suggests that the smartphone will be directly updated to Android 5.1, meaning that it will leapfrog over Android 5.0 in the process.
This is something we’ve seen with past future updates as well and will save a lot of time for the company as well as the carrier. Instead of having to issue two separate updates, Motorola can directly send out this update which has some crucial changes compared to Android 5.0.2. It is important to note that the Verizon Nexus 6 was among the first in the U.S. to run Android 5.1 (out of the box), so the carrier is on the right path to wiping its poor update track record.
It is said that Verizon’s insistence on having VoLTE support built into the software is the reason Android 5.1 is being issued directly. In any case, it’s good news for the customers of the Droid Turbo, although they might have a bit of waiting to do.
Do you own a Droid Turbo? What do you make of this news?
