Google begins Lollipop rollout for Android One phones

Android One

Google launched the Android One program last year with the promise of budget phones with frequent Nexus like software updates. The company has partially failed on the second promise with the latest Android update not hitting the device even a couple of months after the update was initially made available.

However, customers in India are now reporting that Android One phones have started receiving the Lollipop update, thus putting an end to the months of waiting. These devices were announced with Android 4.4.4 KitKat, so this is a major update.

We saw Android One units in Indonesia launching with Android 5.1 out of the box, so it is possible that Google is sending out this particular update to these phones. We don’t have anything in the means of a changelog at the moment, but there shouldn’t be any major changes that we haven’t seen on Nexus phones already.

Since these phones run stock versions of Android, the changes should be on par with Nexus phones. So if you’ve seen a Nexus 4, Nexus 5 or the Nexus 6 around you, expect your Android One device to get a similar experience.
