Xiaomi to launch a Chromecast competitor this Thursday?

The Google Chromecast has seen widespread acclaim and success. It seems like Xiaomi could be looking to leverage this by launching a rival offering of its own at an event on January 15. This event is also expected to reveal a couple of new handsets, so the platform will be perfect for an announcement like this.

There’s no confirmation of this yet, so we’re taking this with a pinch of salt till then. This device known as the Mi Box will reportedly have a few versions, including something which has a console like design, probably like the Nexus Player or Roku. There also seems to be a plug in device based on HDMI, which could most likely be the Chromecast competitor we’re talking about here.

Details about this device are pretty scarce at the moment, but we’re guessing it will be pretty similar in nature compared to the Chromecast, in that it will allow users to stream content onto the large screen using a smartphone. We’ll be particularly curious to see how it functions, especially in comparison to something like a Chromecast.
