According to a new report, Japanese manufacturer Sony could be looking to launch an Android TV based device next year. Our guess is that the device will break cover during January’s CES 2015 event. However, the company might also launch the device slightly later. As of now, there are only a handful of Android TV partners in Google’s bag, so the addition of a major global player like Sony will certainly help.
Details regarding this Android TV offering are scarce at the moment, but it is said that Sony will launch multiple variants. There’s apparently going to be a 1080p version as well as a 4K display model of the Sony Android TV. Unlike the current implementation of Android TV, Sony will launch full blown television sets carrying the necessary hardware and software for Android TV, rather than a standalone set top box.
It will be interesting to see what Sony has to offer in this area as it is a well known name in the electronics industry, although its TV sales have fallen drastically over the past few quarters.
