First Project Ara prototype reportedly launching in December with Android L

Project Ara

Google’s modular device concept, Project Ara will reportedly break cover in December this year with a custom and modified build of Android L. The prototype will be apparently shown during the second Ara developer conference this year, which is an ideal time to showcase how far the Phonebloks team has come ever since Google and Motorola joined hands with the team.

We’re still nowhere close to having an actual device hit the market yet, but the prototype will give us a better idea of what to expect from the future. The customized version of Android L running on this device can apparently allow hot swapping of items (apart from the display module and CPU). Customers who want to add modules can reportedly buy them from an online retail store similar to Google Play. This is a convenient way for customers to play around or tweak their modular device according to their liking.

There’s still a lot we don’t know about this prototype, but we don’t have to wait long to find out.
