Back when talk about Android Silver began, it was expected to be replacing the Nexus series as a premium smartphone range targeted towards the Android hungry public. However, the idea of ditching a profitable Nexus program for something like Android Silver seemed illogical to most. And according to The Information, this project might never even come to fruition.
The ex Chief Business Officer at Google, Nikesh Arora was said to be at the forefront of pushing Android Silver forward. But with his departure from the company, things have seemingly gone cold. We’ve seen hints of this already with Google expected to be launching a relatively large Nexus smartphone codenamed “Shamu” in a couple of months.
While Android Silver made sense in the long run, it is something Google cannot get involved with right now for a variety of reasons, the most important one being the popularity of the Nexus smartphones. So for the time being, fans of the Nexus handsets can breathe easy as it won’t be disappearing just yet.
What do you make of this news? Would you have liked to see Android Silver devices hitting the market in favor of the Nexus line?
