Google Celebrating 1 Year Of Chromecast

A year ago today, Google unveiled and started to sell the Chromecast. The $35 dongle has been used to cast content over 400 million times since it was launched and has been widely praised for its ease-of-use.

The Chromecast, of course, lets you cast content from any compatible apps and services, including Netflix, HBO Go, YouTube, and many more to your HDTV. Google touts the improvements as such.

“We’ve added hundreds of your favorite apps, including WatchESPN, Pandora, Hulu Plus, HBO GO and PBS Kids; announced new features like mirroring your Android device to the TV and expanded to 30,000 stores across 20 countries”.

To celebrate the 1 year anniversary of Chromecast and the 400 million individual casts, Google is giving all Chromecast customers 90 days of Google Play Music All Access for free.

The offer to redeem your 90 days of All Access runs from today, July 24th, until September 30th, as long as you are not already subscribed to All Access. There had to be a catch somewhere, right?

Regular trials of Google Play Music All Access only last a month, so you’ll save an additional $20 over the course of your trial. Of course, if you bought a Chromecast at launch, you were able to get three free months of Netflix, so this type of deal is not unprecedented.

I personally have not purchased a Chromecast yet because I already have an Apple TV, but I will be getting one soon for a secondary TV, as it doesn’t need that full experience.

As Google wraps up their post on the 1 year of Chromecast, they tout the improvements it will be getting later this year.

We’re not done yet. In the coming months, we’ll be making more updates, like the ability to allow others to cast to your TV without needing to be on the same WiFi network, and a customizable homescreen with personal photos or beautiful art. Your Chromecast will be automatically updated with these new features once they’re available.
Happy birthday, Chromecast. Here’s to another great year ahead!

If you are like me and have not purchased a Chromecast yet, they are available from a wide variety of retailers including Best Buy, Amazon, Google, and most likely at a local retail chain if you live in a country that Google sells the Chromecast in.
