A couple of days ago Sony announced a new upcoming smartphone called the Xperia ZL2 that will soon be released in the Japanese market. The device is similar to the previously launched Xperia Z2 but with a smaller display, plastic back, and slightly larger chassis. Today, we have found new photos and videos of the Xperia ZL2 which we have posted below.
One thing we found out about the Xperia ZL2 is that it uses a Vertical Alignment (VA) display similar to that used by the Xperia Z1. This might be a disappointment for customers who are looking for an In Plane Switching (IPS) display. We’re still not sure why Sony is using a VA display on this device when an IPS display would be better.
IPS vs VA
- While both panels claim a viewing angle of 178 degrees, IPS displays does not change colors when viewed in different angles. A VA display will have a color degradation once viewed at a certain angle.
- IPS has a faster response time than VA. This allows for the elimination of blur or distortion when watching action movies or sports videos.
- IPS has a better screen reliability than VA.
The Sony Xperia ZL2 is the second ZL device that the company will be releasing. The first one called the Xperia ZL was launched last year and is a slimmed down version of the Xperia Z. Unlike the Xperia ZL which did not have a waterproof or dustproof feature the Xperia ZL2 comes with an IP55 / IP58 rating making it able to resist water and dust.
Here are the key differences between Z2 and the Z2L
- has 4 a percent larger display
- uses an aluminum frame
- uses a glass panel back
- has a 7 percent larger battery
- is 32 percent thinner
- is more durable
- has a slimmer bezel
- has a more rounded body
- has 32GB of storage
- is easier to use with one hand
The Sony Xperia ZL2 uses a 5-inch 1080×1920 pixel resolution Triluminos display (441 pixels per inch) that has Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2 and X-Reality technologies. It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat straight out of the box. Powering the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AB) quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz with an Adreno 330 GPU. There’s 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can further be increased using a microSD.
The device uses an impressive 20.7MP rear camera that comes with a 1/2.3” sensor with G Lens as well as a 3.1MP front camera. Its other features 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and a 3000mAh battery.
The ZL2 is going to be available soon on Japanese telecom operator KDDI in turquoise, white, and black. An international release is expected to follow soon.
