Cheetah Mobile Releases Free App To Protect Android Devices From Ransomware

One of the latest threats to land on the Android platform is ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malware that’s popular in the Windows operating system that locks a machine and demands payment before a user can be given access. One popular Windows ransomware called Cryptolocker has evolved to also target the Android platform which is why appropriate measure must be taken by owners of Android devices.

Here’s how Cryptolocker works on the Android platform

  • An Android user downloads an infected APK file from third party sources
  • Once the ransomware gets inside the device the user is prevented from using it
  • The user receives a message on the screen claiming to be from a law enforcement agency accusing the user of illegal acts
  • The ransomware tries to convince the user to pay a certain amount of money

Cheetah Mobile (formerly known as KS Mobile) has released a security app over at the Google Play Store which protects devices against ransomware, specifically the Cryptolocker. The app is free to download and based on the reviews by those who have tried the app it looks to be very promising (it currently has a 4.7 star rating out of a perfect 5 stars).

The CM Security app is fast, lightweight and ultra-secure. Its security highlights include an antivirus engine that is powered locally and through the cloud. It is able to fix any system vulnerability and it scans new apps for any threats at the same time offering real time protection. As far as the scanning feature goes, the company claims that it can scan a device in only 5 seconds which is faster than paid applications.
