Google Gives Refund Plus $5 Play Store Credit To Consumers Who Bought “Virus Shield” App

Just recently an app was released over at the Google Play store that was supposed to protect Android devices from nasty viruses. The app called Virus Shield cost $3.99 to download which in less than a week made it to the top of the charts garnering more than 10,000 downloads. Unknown to consumers the app really did nothing and simply displayed a few images and a toggle which was discovered by Artem Russakovskii and several other readers of AndroidPolice.

Ever since it was reported that Virus Shield really did nothing it was pulled out of the Play Store. The developer behind the app said it was a mistake and that it was not really intended for release in the first place. Jesse Carter of Deviant Solutions said that “One of our developers simply made a foolish mistake. The app version that was decompiled by AndroidPolice was not intended to be released. It was an early placeholder that our ui designer created. There was a mix-up between the version that contained the antivirus code for our app.”

Carter further added that they were not able to earn anything from the app since their Google Play Developer account was suspended before they could correct the mistake. The app was taken down from the store on the 15th of this month which is the time that Google processes developer payments.

Google wants to rectify the situation by issuing a full refund to those who purchased the app. In addition to this a $5 Play Store credit will also be given. A message released by the company states that
