Samsung G9098 Android Flip Phone Headed To China

Clamshell or flip phones were once the most popular form factor in 2009 in the United States however with the entry smartphones consumers now prefer touch-based displays or slide-out keyboards. This does not mean though that there is no market for flip phones with Samsung expected to launch an Android powered flip phone in China soon.

The Samsung SM-G9098 sports a clamshell design and just recently got certified by China’s TENAA. This means that it is going to be officially unveiled soon although no specific date has been announced yet. This is just one of the latest clamshell devices that Samsung will be releasing in China as last year the company released several flip phones which included the Samsung Galaxy Golden.

The Samsung SM-G9098 is a clamshell device running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean that sports two displays, one located outside and the other located inside. Both displays have a 3.67-inch size and have a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.  While this is much lower than a FHD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution this device does not need a high resolution since its display is only 3.67 inches. Powering the device is a 2.3GHz quad-core processor which could quite possibly be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset. It’s got 2GB of RAM which should make multi tasking between various applications go smoothly. The TENAA listing also shows that this model has two cameras although its exact megapixel count was not listed. The photos however indicate that at least one of the cameras is a 13MP shooter. Other features include Bluetooth, WLAN, GPRS, GPS, USB, and 3.5mm audio jack. One downside to this model is that it does not come with a microSD expansion slot so consumers will have to rely on its internal storage without any way of expanding it save for cloud storage solutions.

The SM-G9098 is going to be released exclusively for the China Mobile carrier. This means that it will support GSM and TD-SCDMA networks in China. There’s also no indication that this device will be released outside of China, not even in South Korea,  as it appears to be exclusively available only on China Mobile.
