Chinese company Gionee has just announced what appears to be the world’s thinnest smartphone to date. The company name may be unfamiliar to consumers outside of its home country but it has already released several high quality models that is able to compete with other popular brands in the market. The Gionee Elife S5.5 was recently announced at an event in China and is best known for its thin profile of only 5.5mm.
The Gionee Elife S5.5 is now available for pre-order in China with the company promising that it will also be available in 40 other countries. This model snatches the previous thinnest smartphone record held by another Chinese smartphone called the Vivo X3 released in summer of last year which is 5.75mm thick.
As far as specifications go it’s definitely impressive. The device makes use of a magnesium alloy frame that makes it strong despite being extra thin. It sports a 5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It also uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect it from scratches. On top of the display is the 5MP front camera that has a 95 degree wide angle lens. The rear side of the device has a 13MP auto focus camera using a Sony sensor and comes with an LED flash.
Powering this device is a 1.7 GHz Octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor and when combined with its 2GB RAM will definitely provide a smooth user experience. It runs on Android 4.2 straight out of the box with the company’s own Amigo 2.0 user interface.
