Chromecast Gets New Apps And Local Content Streaming

Google’s $35 little set-top dongle just got a lot more powerful. Adding to the list of existing Chromecast apps today is quite a few  additions:

  • BeyondPod
  • PostTV
  • Red
  • Revision 3
  • Songza
  • Vevo
  • Viki

The addition of BeyondPod is really great for people who listen to podcasts and Vevo is great for people who like to watch music videos. But there’s a few more apps that also make the Chromecast more powerful.

  • Avid
  • Plex
  • RealPlayer Cloud

These three apps allow you to stream local content already on your device to the Chromecast. So if you have a DVD that you legally own and have ripped to your computer, you can place the video file into Plex and then stream it to your TV. It can be portable on your phone or tablet and then you can then stream it to any Chromecast.

That’s a really great new feature-set for the little $35 dongle. I might pick one up, especially with all of these holiday deals going on. But since I have an Apple TV, I’m not sure. But for those of you without both, will you get a Chromecast because of these new features?
