HTC and Samsung have been updating their 2013 (and 2012) flagships to Android 4.3 in recent days, but with Sony’s newest flagships, the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra, launching with Android 4.2.2 only recently, an update to Android 4.3 wouldn’t be likely to arrive before the year ends, which make it quite an excruciating wait for consumers.
Ideally, both devices should have launched with 4.3 out of the box, but since the damage is already done, Sony is looking to make up for it by updating the two handsets directly to Android 4.4. While this hasn’t been confirmed officially, SonyViet has it from one of their sources that that is what the Japanese manufacturer is planning, with the updates expected to start rolling out sometime in January. Older devices, like the Xperia Z, ZL and ZR will get Android 4.3 as originally planned, and there’s no saying whether they’ll ever make it to Android 4.4.
Sony had earlier said that it would reveal Android 4.4 update plans for its devices by mid-November, so until then, take all such leaks and rumors with a pinch of salt. It will be awesome if Sony does leapfrog the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra to Android 4.4, and we can only hope they’ll do it in a swift and timely manner.
