OUYA System Update “Abominable Snowman” Is Now Live

Do you own the OUYA Android gaming console? The console is getting an update which is now live today and it’s a huge one. The “Abominable Snowman” update brings several improvements to the console most notable in the user interface which has been revamped. The company describes the interface as “more intuitive, visually appealing, and better able to feature your games.” There’s also support for external storage which is still in its open beta phase. There are a few more features included in this update as well as the usual bug fixes.

External storage (open beta)

The device now supports external storage from a USB drive and supports NTFS, FAT32, and ext4 file formats. Games downloaded to the external storage are associated with the OUYA system that downloaded them which means that it can’t be used other systems. Since this feature is still in open beta there are still a few minor things that need to be polished such as the long time it takes to install a game on USB. Scanning of games on an external storage device may also take a few minutes if more than a hundred games are installed.

UI Revamp

The user interface has been revamped to make it more appealing to gamers. A new feature has been added to easily update a game title on the fly. Game titles are now also prominently displayed below the title art making it easier to browse. The game icons have also been improved to indicate if updates are available. Controller indications also appear for all connected controllers and also display a low battery notification.

Double Tapping OUYA icon brings System Menu

Gamers can now easily exit from a game simply by double tapping the OUYA icon. This brings the System Menu which has several options which allows users to exit games, eject a USB drive, turn off controllers, or put OUYA into sleep mode.

Faster system updates

The Abominable Snowman update comes with a feature called “Incremental Updates” which allows for updates to be quickly downloaded on the device.
