Neptune Pine Kickstarter Campaign Launches

Early this year we reported about a smartwatch called the Neptune Pine which is being called as the “the world’s first independent smartwatch” by Neptune Computer, a Canadian startup company. Fast forward to November and we just learned that a new Kickstarter campaign has just been launched to fund the mass production and release of the device.

The Neptune Pine campaign has a goal of reaching $100,000 but as early as now it has already exceeded the target with 30 days left to go. A total of 830 backers have already pledged an amount totaling to $206,365 CAD which is more than twice the target. A $199 pledge gets you a 16GB Jet Black Neptune Pine however all slots for this have been taken already. The next amount that you can pledge that will get you the device is $229 which still saves you $106 from the $335 MSRP.

What makes the Neptune Pine different from all the other smartwatches available in the market today? One of its strongest features is that it can work independently without the need of a smartphone. It has a micro-SIM slot that allows it to connect to a cellular network. Voice calls, text messages, and even video calls can be made from using this device.

The device also comes with dual cameras with dual LED flash. A front camera that has an LED flash can be used to make video calls. There’s also a 5 megapixel rear camera with LED flash that can take photos as well as record HD videos. To use the rear camera all that is needed is to snap the device out of the wristband.

While other smartwatches in the market have a mediocre battery life the Neptune Pine is optimized for extended usage. On paper the device can achieve a 5 day standby time, 10 hours playing music, 8 hours talk time, and 7 hours browsing on the Internet.
