2.5 GHz variant of the Snapdragon 800 chip could be on the cards

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800

As we are all well aware, the Snapdragon 800 SoC is currently the most sought after chipset in the mobile industry, especially by Android OEMs. A smartphone with Snapdragon 800 onboard is instantly given the flagship status and with good reason. However, there could be an even better version of the current Snapdragon 800 chip in the coming days known as the Snapdragon MSM8974AC. According to the head of Chinese OEM Gionee, there will be a 2.5 GHz configuration of the Snapdragon 800 chip launching next year. There’s no confirmation of this coming from Qualcomm, so we’ll hold onto this report with a grain of salt for the time being.

If this upgraded version of Snapdragon 800 does in fact exist, then we can expect manufacturers like Sony, LG, Samsung and HTC to launch their respective flagships next year with this beast. But since it’s a mere increase in clockspeed and not in the CPU architecture itself, this won’t exactly be a monumental upgrade from the current crop of Snapdragon 800 chips which are sold in 2.2 and 2.3 GHz configurations.
