Samsung Galaxy S5 launch may be scheduled in January

The Samsung Galaxy S5 launch may be closer than what we have expected. A new rumor revealed by the South Korean publication Naver suggests that the electronics giant may be planning to hold the launch in early 2014, possibly in January. In February 2014, the upcoming flagship device may already hit market shelves.

Naver claims that the weak performance in terms of sales of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is what is pushing the manufacturer to have the Samsung Galaxy S5 launch scheduled earlier than usual. The Galaxy S4, it would be recalled, was announced on March 2013. Prior to that, the Galaxy S3 was announced on May 2012. The earlier launch date would also allow Samsung to have a device that could compete more effectively against the Apple iPhone 5S available sooner in the market.

Citing Samsung insiders as its source, Naver furthermore said that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will feature the 64-bit Exynos 5430 chipset. This allegation is supported by an announcement last month that came from Samsung president Shin Jong-kyun that 64-bit processors will be onboard their upcoming devices from the Galaxy product line.

It had been speculated as well that Samsung will introduce water-resistant and dust-proof features to the S5—features that Samsung had already offered on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. These features would render the Samsung Galaxy S5 protected against a submersion in water for around 30 minutes, even without a case.

A previous rumor also pointed to a metal chassis for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Last month, it was reported that Samsung was already in negotiations with a Taiwanese supplier to provide the metal casings. The new chassis would allow Samsung to compete better against the aluminum-clad HTC One and iPhone 5S.

Other rumors have suggested that the S5 will arrive with 3GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage capacity, and a 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization.

If the earlier launch date rumor proves to be accurate, Samsung may have an Unpacked Event that would coincide with, or be close to the date of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2014, which is scheduled on January 7th in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, there are speculations that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will not be Samsung’s 2014 flagship device. That handset, supposedly, would come from the new line of F smartphones that the company is also preparing to launch next year. Such product line is expected to arrive around March next year.
