HTC’s two key people, CEO Peter Chou and Chairwoman Cher Wang spoke with Financial Times in an interview recently and gave out some interesting details about the company’s immediate future. For the time being, it seems like Chou will be offloading some of his Chairman duties to Cher Wang, who will now have the added responsibility of working around marketing and supplier relationships of the company. This would reportedly allow Chou to focus more on innovation and development of new products.
Speaking about future devices, Cher Wang said the company plans to launch a new tablet which will be “something nice and disruptive”. And as far as wearables or smartwatches are concerned, Chou claimed that the technology is still pretty fresh and merely a concept even now, while being dismissive about current smartwatches in the market. He said – “It has to meet a need, otherwise if it’s just a gimmick or concept, it’s not for people’s day-to-day lives. That is an opportunity for us“.
The company will have to do a lot more than just innovate for it to succeed in this vastly competitive mobile market, especially since it doesn’t have a lot of marketing money to shell out. It will be interesting to see how the company approaches this current crisis.
