TDG Answers: I Can’t Use Either Samsung Keyboard or Swype on Galaxy S4

Unfortunately, there are still owners who are complaining a thing or two about the keyboard in their phone may it be the stock Samsung Keyboard or Swype. Here’s an email message that best describes this problem:


My phone, a Galaxy S IV, seems to have been messed up. The keyboard doesn’t seem to show up whenever I tap on text fields like it did before.

At first I was using the default Samsung Keyboard but since it won’t show up, I tried download Swype and the problem still persists even now. Basically, I can’t use my phone anymore because I can’t even login to my accounts on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Do you have a solution to this problem? Please help.


Possible Causes

A keyboard problem may be caused by either hardware or a software glitch, or both. But based on emails we received related to Samsung Galaxy S4 keyboard problems, the following are the most common causes:

  • Keyboard was not set or configured as default.
  • Physical trauma and liquid damage.
  • The Handwriting feature was enabled on Samsung keyboard.
  • Firmware or app needs updating.


Set A Default Keyboard. The first thing you should check when this problem occurs is the default keyboard; it would let you know if there’s currently a default keyboard set for the device. This method is applicable regardless of what kind of keyboard you’re using.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Menu.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap My Device.
  4. Choose Language and Input.
  5. Now touch Default and select input method.

Check For Physical / Liquid Damage. In case you’re device fell off your pocket, received a blow of any sort or was in any way been exposed to liquid / water, there is always a high probability that the keyboard wouldn’t function like it did before. Whatever you do on your end, everything will be futile. So, you  better bring the phone to a tech where it would be checked and repaired.

Disable Handwriting Feature. There is also a possibility that the handwriting feature on the Galaxy S4 was enabled. Naturally, you couldn’t use your keyboard like you normally do when this feature was turned on. Here’s how you turn it off, or at least check if it was turned on.

  1. Bring up the keyboard.
  2. Touch and hold the microphone icon.
  3. Touch the keyboard icon.

Note: If the Handwriting feature was disabled, you could see a pen icon with T text next to it instead of the keyboard icon.

Going a bit deeper, you can also reset Samsung keyboard to its original settings.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Application Manager.
  3. Swipe to the right to choose All tab.
  4. Scroll to and tap Samsung Keyboard.
  5. Tap Force Stop, then OK.
  6. Tap Clear Data button.
  7. Touch OK to confirm the reset.

Note: All of your personal settings would also be deleted when you do this.

Update Firmware Or App. If there is an available update for your device, you may want to install it to see if the problem would be solved. More often when there are bugs with the current firmware, an update would be rolled out to make it easier for users to fix the problem. If you’re using Swype, you should also check on possible updates.

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. My Device.
  3. Language and Input.
  4. Touch Settings icon next to Swype.
  5. Tap Updates.

  1. I have the same issue right now with my Galaxy S4. I have tried all the above, when I get to the input settings it is grayed out. Nothing works. I haven’t dropped or gotten the phone wet which is strange.

  2. I have a Galaxy S5 and the keyboard just stopped working today. I followed the instructions for the S4 in the above forum and it still doesn’t work. I tried to update the software and I got a message that there wasn’t enough space on my phone. I then went and moved recently updated applications to my SD card and got rid of downloaded documents and cleaned out a bunch of “junk” to free up space. When I went to install the update it restarted but because the phone takes a minute to find my WiFi, it did not install due to “no WiFi signal”. SO, I made sure the phone detected my signal and tried the update again BUT it now says software is up to date and I can’t check for updates for 23 hr and 17 minutes. UGH. I can’t type anything: Texts, emails, search on Google, Comment on Facebook. Is there anything I can do? I was considering resetting to factory defaults but that would be a total pain. I am currently going to transfer all my pictures to my picture drive just in case this phone is about to crap out on me or I end up having to reset the phone. I appreciate any help you can provide!
