Galaxy S4 getting Galaxy Gear compatibility by the end of October

Samsung Galaxy Gear

According to Samsung Mobile‘s Executive VP of Marketing, Lee Young-hee, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch will be compatible with the Galaxy S4 by the end of October. As of now, the Galaxy Gear is only compatible with the Galaxy Note 3 smartphone. However, the upcoming Android 4.3 update for Samsung flagships will reportedly pack compatibility for the smartwatch.

Samsung will also start rolling out updates to the Galaxy Note II and the Galaxy S III smartphones to bring compatibility with the Galaxy Gear. But these two smartphones will have to wait until December for the roll out of the Android 4.3 update. Since the Galaxy Gear smartwatch runs on Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (default feature on Android 4.3), it’s imperative that older smartphones receive the update to gain compatibility with the smartwatch.

So it seems like the reach of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch will only be limited to the buyers of the Galaxy Note 3 for the time being. A price reduction perhaps could turn things around for Samsung, but until then, we don’t expect the Galaxy Gear to make any sort of an impact.
