Sony launching mountable smartphone lens with built in Wi-Fi, NFC

Sony Smartphone Lens

Sony is believed to be working on a new mountable smartphone camera lens which apparently packs its own imaging sensor and the entire set of connectivity options like Wi-Fi, NFC. The rumor generates from a site called Sony Alpha Rumors, which ranks it highly among rumors with an S5 rating which is considered – “almost certainly correct!” It is also believed to feature a separate battery and a memory module, thus making it a standalone device rather than a mountable accessory.

The site has also posted a rather blurry image of the lens next to an Xperia smartphone. It seems like this sensor will be an exclusive to Xperia smartphones, as it is almost impossible to make an accessory fit snug with every device. Expect this new lens to be announced sometime during the IFA event in September.

Smartphones like the Xperia Z and the Xperia Z Ultra both feature similar design on the back, so it goes without saying that the lens will be compatible with them. Perhaps Sony can launch an adapter like accessory for other smartphones so that people with non Xperia smartphones can make use of the lens.
