Samsung has bought Boxee for $30 million

Some news from Samsung and Boxee today. Samsung has reportedly bought Boxee and its 40 workers for $30 million. Samsung will most likely use their technology to further their smart TV efforts in order to be ready for if and/or when Apple makes a true television set.

They could also be working on something to counter Google’s own TV service, which has so far failed to gain much traction in the public space. Samsung could be one of the better competitors to anyone because for most cable boxes and other devices, you have to connect them to a TV first and thus, you’d see Samsung and Boxee’s software first.

UPDATE: Brian Chen, of the New York times has confirmed with Samsung that they have indeed acquired Boxee for the previously mentioned terms.

Here is what Samsung said to the New York Times: ““Samsung has acquired key talent and assets from Boxee.” “This will help us continue to improve the overall user experience across our connected devices.”
