HTC Desire 500 launched in Taiwan

The HTC Desire 500 has been unveiled in a launch event in Taiwan. This is an entry-level smartphone that nonetheless comes with an expensive price tag. In HTC’s home country, the smartphone retails for $400 off-contract. According to Engadget, the price could be due to a deal between HTC and Taiwan Mobile, a wireless carrier. By pricing the device at $400 off-contract, consumers are encouraged to avail of Taiwan Mobile’s subsidized cost for the smartphone. HTC has not revealed whether the smartphone will be launched internationally, and whether it will have the same price. The same device, however, had been previously spotted on a leaked roadmap of a Germany-based carrier, so there could be hope that the smartphone will be sold outside of Taiwan.

The HTC Desire 500 shares some of the features of the HTC One, the phone maker’s flagship smartphone for the year. Among these are the HTC Sense 5 UI, BlinkFeed and Video Highlights. However, it does not offer the BoomSound speakers that are also on the Desire 600, the Butterfly S, the HTC One, and the HTC One Mini.

 Technical specifications

Being an entry-level device, the HTC Desire 500 offers entry-level specifications. It packs a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded through a microSD card. It also sports an 8 MP camera with autofocus, LED flash, dedicated ImageChip processor, and f/2.0 aperture. This is complemented by a 1.6 MP front-facing camera. The smartphone also has a 4.3-inch SLCD screen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. This device is powered by a 1800 mAh removable Li-polymer battery that promises around 12 to 17 hours of talktime and around 400 hours of standby time. Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, and DLNA are all supported.

 Other upcoming devices

HTC had been busy lately with the launch of the Desire 500, and earlier, the One Mini. Yet, there are still several smartphones which are expected to be unveiled soon. These include the HTC One Max and the HTC Zara. There have not been a lot of information on these handsets. However, it has been revealed that the HTC One Max will be a slightly larger handset that will compete against the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. On the other hand, the HTC Zara will feature a plastic chassis and possibly an affordable price. It had been rumored that the HTC One Max would be launched late this month, but so far, no word on its unveiling has been announced.
