How great would it be if all smartphones and tablets came pre-rooted and without all the bloatware manufacturers and carriers cram into the device memory? Well, there is a startup company that is wants to come up with a tablet that is sold pre-rooted an promises to offer a pure nexus-like experience with the latest version of Android right out of the box. If you would love to see such a device in the market and perharps help set the stage for more devices like this, Tronity, the team behind Root 101 tablet is seeking your help on Indiegogo and you just may have one of these tablets by August.
Unlike smartphones, tablets, in particular Android tablets, brand is always a very crucial factor to consider when buying quality. This is because many unknown brand tablets entering the market especially from China are often build from poor quality materials and even when they are durable there are bound to be other issues such as poor display, low storage space, lack of manufacturer support and other issues. Tronity is promising that the build of Root 101 will be as good as that of Google’s and Asus’ Nexus tablet and the manufacturer will provide support and software updates for as long as necessary.
Root 101 is a blend of modest yet quality hardware specifications, quality materials build and will come with stock Android 4.22 Jelly Bean. The manufacturers call this tablet the first truly open source tablet that will not only come pre-rooted but will also offer the two most popular custom Android ROMS – Paranoid Android and CyanogenMod. Users who buy this tablet will be able to choose which Android ROM they prefer and download it from the company’s site. This means that the manufacturer will have tested the ROMs and will guarantee stellar performance of the ROM on the hardware. Tronity will also offer support and instructions on how users can install either of the ROMs.
Build, design and core specs
A picture of Root 101 shows a device a lot like Google’s Nexus 10 tablet – with a thick bezel, front plastic and most aluminum back plate. This build promises that the tablet will be stronger and durable but light. The device measures 260 x 173mm and is just 9.9mm thick. The core specs of Root 101 include:
Processor: Dual-core 1.5GHz AmLogic AML8726-MX CPU with dual Mali 400 GPU
Display: 10.1 inch 1280 x 800 pixels IPS HD screen
Memory: 1GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage with microSD card slot (up to 32GB)
Cameras: VGA front, 2 megapixels rear camera
Battery: 7,000 mAh
Availability and price
Tronity promises that backers of Root 101 should expect to have the tablet sometime in August if it meets its funding goals on Indiegogo. Production is expected to begin in July but at the moment, the tablet is still on its development stages but once it is complete, it will sell for just $169. The price may however be higher depending on the specs the buyer chooses. Buyers within the US will get free shipping too but those outside the US will part with an extra $20 for shipping.
What do you think of this tablet? Will Root 101 open a new frontier in the development of pre-rooted devices or does it not stand a chance against the sharks already in the market?
