Leaked images of a huge Sony Xperia device found their way to the internet just yesterday and earlier today, Sony send out ‘Save the Date’ invitations for July 4th. These two events are related in one way – there is a high chance that Sony will be unveiling the huge 6.44 inch phablet touted to be Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
Sony will be hosting a mobile press event on Thursday 4th (about 3 weeks from now) in Paris and is expected to unveil their new phablet which is expected to carry on the raw power, reliability and ruggedness of their current flagship smartphone Sony Xperia Z. In the press invite, Sony promises ‘a big surprise for you’, big being the key word. The images leaked earlier portray a 6.44 inch phablet that is expected to take on a number of existing Android phablets in the market including Samsung’s 6 inch Galaxy Note 3 whose prototype leaked just a few days ago, Samsung Galaxy Mega which is a 6.3 inch ‘tablet’ and Acer’s 5.7 inch Liquid S1 phablet.
Although there has never been an official word from Sony, rumors of the Xperia Z Ultra started doing rounds on the internet a couple of months ago and it seems its launch is imminent next month if the photos leaked online are anything to go by. The ‘Save the Date’ invitation by Sony also has a number of hidden hints besides the ‘Big’ surprise including the visibility of the side of the phablet it is expected to announce on the day. The images also point at the possibility of the device supporting a stylus.
We will have to wait till July 4th for confirmation of the details of this new Android monster but there are rumors that leaked from ePrice.com. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra, also Xperia ZU, will have a 6.44 inch IPS display with a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080, translating to about 342 ppi pixels density. The phablet is also rumored to be powered by an impressive quad core 2.2 GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, has 2 GB of RAM to complement the powerful processor and will have 16 GB onboard memory but with a microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 64 GB cards supported). Other core specs include an 8 megapixels rear camera with Exmor RS sensor, a 1.3 megapixels front camera with Exmor R Sensor and 3,000 mAh battery.
Images reveal a thin profile device that is about 6.5 mm thick with a volume rocker, dedicated camera button, power button and a headset jack on the side. We cannot tell whether the phablet will have water and dust resistance capabilities that the Sony Xperia Z phone has though. For now, we wait for any new developments or leaks or wait till July 4th to know how ‘Big’ the surprise Sony has for us actually is.
